I'm a candle wax fan. I work mostly on 30s and 40s era stuff and so far a bit of propane heat and candle wax has yet to fail. Yes, ATF and acetone will also work well at penetrating but it's best to soak it and forget about it for a day or 2. FWIW I'd wax it from the chamber side and the top. Even with the wax I let it stand for 10-15min re-heating and applying a bit when it's cool enough to touch. Works like a magic trick.

Hey. I blew a head gasket last night, so this would be perfect timing Larry! I've got the old head off and everything! :D

  5. out of curiousity does it have 2 piece plugs in it? could you break the plugs apart, then use a drill press and progressively drill the plugs from the inside out? eventually the remaining casing of the plug should get thin enough that you could tap the corner and break it out that way?

it's amazing what a little coke will do. I unstuck a piston in a flathead with coke. Right around the time I cut back my drinking of the stuff. Gotta wonder what it's doing to my body if it will do that

  7. Sorry for not reading the whole thread but am on a short lunch break and figured that I'd throw in my $0.02

When I worked at Mopar City in Illinois someone brought us a block that they had broken a tap off in. We're talking "flush with the deck" broken off... We took it to a place in Rockford that used some sort of ultrasonic machine that actually fractured the tap into small pieces and didn't hurt the block one bit. It wasn't cheap, but it WORKED.

I'm also a HUGE fan of the candle wax & propane torch trick! When I was disassembling the 49 truck (after it had been sitting outdoors for who knows how long) some of the bolts & nuts were really scary looking. A little bar of hotel soap works pretty well too!

    Good luck!

I gave up and took the head over to my neighbor's weld shop and asked him to get the plugs out...15 minutes with a torch heating the manifold and Voila!...they're out with no damage to the head at all.

Gonna hafta have a heli-coil on one hole, but the other 3 holes look good. Thanks for all the help guys.

I can't believe I read the whole thing. In my opinion..I can't remember who it was, but whoever said to heat the plug and then quench it with a penatrant was on the money. I just use water. Same principle though...heat to expand, then quench to contract. Do that about 3 or 4 times and it breaks the bond between the two metals. Works on any bolt or screw. By the way my vote for penatrant is Kroil...I've seen amazing things happen with that stuff.

  13. Break off the porcelin and drill the plugs out with progessively larger drill bits until you get to near the threads and then pick remaining metal out with dental pic style tools.

Last year I had a stuck king pin. I tried everything, you name it we tried it finally my buddy/neighbor who is a big truck mechanic said well Ive got this thing we can try (it was like an air powered engraving pencil) he buzzed that thing all around the kingpin boss and it then tapped right out I still cant believe it he said he got it from an engineer at CATERPILLAR.
