I have done much searching, but havent really got a clear answer. I need to lower the rear of this thing a bit so I can get in it easier, as I am in a wheelchair. I actually like the way it sits, and if I could walk I would leave it. It has the stock Model A rear bone, unsplit. It seems most dislike the idea of a split rear bone, but I do see cars done this way, mostly track T's.(I know that doesnt make it right) I would like to come down at least 4 inches in the rear, but it appears I only have about 2.5" of clearance between the frame, and where the wishbones p*** underneath it. I know I can remove leaves, but I still have the bone-clearance issue. Which way would be best to do this? I am trying to avoid stepping the frame, as the bed wood is all done and I like having the use of the bed. I really dont want to move the bed up either. SO, what options am I left with? Split the bones and move the mounts inwards a bit, towards the pumpkin, and make new mounts near the trans, with a panhard bar? What do you guys think I should do. I want to get this damn thing so I can drive it........ Thanks!!! James
i'm no A expert but if you split the rear bones and moved the spring behind the axle instead of above it you should easily be able to get a 4" drop. it would keep the perfect simple look of the truck too, that thing is sweet
sorry i can't tell what tires are on it. how about smaller diameter wheels,15 inch. that will lower both front and back same maintaining "stance". if you go w/ t spring what about bringing front down the same? i am asuuming you don't want a tail dragger but overall just lower. good luck and keep us posted. nice ride!
reverse the spring eyes and use the T spring. that is about as much as you can do without starting in on the frame. I took 2 leaves out and reversed my spring eyes and it was good for about 2 1/2 inches. In truth- the truck looks awesome the way it sits.
Replace the rear spring with a T spring with reversed eyes, that should give you about 4", but...... then you have the wishbone issue. When you cut the wishbone loose from the torque tube, the axle will want to rotate, and the wishbone is not up to the job. So, split the wishbone and move the front mounts out to the frame. Add some radius rods on top of the axle and put the front mounts inside the frame rails. You now have a sort of 4-bar using all old Ford parts. Cheers, Stewart. P.S. If you decide to go this route, I will donate a set of '46 radius rods to the cause for free! Give me a call and they are yours!
Thanks stewart!!!! I'm thinking I may go this route.... I am glad everyone responded, but you seem to be one of the only ones who read the whole thing and listened about the 'bone interference! I know I have seen it done this way on here somewhere..... Thanks! James
