What is this?...My buddy Clint Ring has this little racer that he wants me to list for him on the 'bay, but we don't know any history other than it was raced up in Iowa back in the '50's by a Father/Son team. It has a unique fully adjustable torsion bar front end and coil springs and tube shocks on the rear...cool looking front radius rods and aircraft seatbelts. The motor is a 1946 4 h.p. Cushman. What would you cl***ify this as?...it's not a go-cart. The fibergl*** body has an old unique wire mesh structure underneath....any help/info would be greatly appreciated.
i'D call it a 1/2 midget. 1/4's of the era all ran small motors, little 2 1/2 Decos (Continental) and Techumsa(sp) that used to be Lauson, and Clinton and Wisconson. Bigest for 1/4 midgets was 3 hp. But some clubs ran other motors, too. If it's big enough for an adult to sit in, and it looks like it is, than it's a 1/2.
This is a unique car. The rear suspension is modified from a 50 Series Cushman Pacemaker (1946-1949. This includes the engine, clutch, drive pulley, springs and brake ***embly. Interesting piece for sure. Thanks for sharing.
I don't think it is home made . I just did a quick search on ebay, seems to me one was just on there for sale. It was called an Orbit or some off name like that . Try searching ,http://www.4cycle.com/, this is a go kart web site. Or spend time searching completed listings in Ebay. I found it on Ebay searching in the completed listings, "vintage go kart" It was called an orbit but does look a little different
I'm in Iowa, know guys that used to race those, came from a town with a track for them, always wanted one to restore to save my youthful memories............. .............sounds like you just need me to drive down and get it out of your hair! I can be there in a few hours! SPark
Clint said the guy he got it from told him it was factory made, but has also been modified some. He's wanting to get around $750 for it on the 'bay.
