Is there any trick to getting my transmission unstuck? It's a stock 216 1950 chevy. I Was driving it the other day and shifted into 3rd and it never came out... I've took all the shift linkages off ( I was going to convert to floor shifter instead of column) and it's still very hard to move around. Doesn't seem to be shifting when it does move either. Any help, or thoughts on what's going on would be great. thanks
Not too hard to pull the side cover and see what's happening. Borken shift fork maybe? People liked to ride around resting their right hand on the shift lever. This creates a lot of wear on the 2-3 shifter fork inside the ******.
Sounds like you may have forced the First/Reverse fork and 2/3 fork at same time and caused a lockup. Take side cover off after draining and have a peek. Was going to suggest replacing with a Cast Iron 1950 Powerglide, but that would be real cruel.
Mine gets stuck in 3rd if i come to a complete stop in gear. To get it to "unstick" i have to get it rolling in gear then am able to shift out of gear. I am sure there is something wrong with it but have learned to drive it that way for now. As long as i shift out of gear before stopping i'm ok. I'll check the fork on mine as well when i pull the ******. Cesar
Shift problems in these period Chevies come from a nasty little box holding the shift stuff on the steering column.
Here is the culprit.... One side has a new groove worn in. That caused the jam just like everybody said. New question is will a 55 up ****** shift case fit? I have a spare 57 chevy 3 speed I can use for parts ( don't want to go to open driveshaft, new rear end ect.ect. If I don't have to) Thanks
Well you got both pieces, right? Unscrew it and take a peek. If it looks like it will work then it will. They will be the same OR a lot different.
I seem to remember that a 55 transmission will fit . Internally, shoot they were the same as far as Blocking rings , syncronizers, and the like go . scrubba
