I remember reading that as of the first of the year, non-registered YOM plates couldn't be registered. I just stumbled acroos something that indicated that was extended to September. Anyone dealt with it recently and know for sure? Anyone have ressources for plates? Looking for a set of 1941 car plates.
I just did my 1954 last week with no problem. The year has to match the car. And the color codes had to be correct for that year. ( yellow letters with black back ground )
That "law" only affects vehicles registered as "Classic" running YOM plates. It doesn't affect vehicle registered as "Antique" running YOM plates. It was extended to Sept 2011 and will hopefully be tossed altogether come September. For plates, there's a guy in SA that deals in old plates... 210-532-7456 his name is Jesse Perez.
From what I've read it looks like they've allowing YOM plates until 9/1/11. Check out the sites below and let me know if you agree. http://www.texasyom.com/home/research http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/TN/htm/TN.504.htm
Their book isn't always right. I went around and around with the DMV on a set of unused 1969 plates. They said the plates should be black and mine were white. I stood my ground and made them call Austin, found out the plates were right and they had to change their book. I don't have his number anymore but there used to be a plate dealer named Roy Caroll who came to a lot of the swap meets.
As of September 1, 2011, no new applications for the use of YOM plates under Classic registration will be accepted. Customers who currently have YOM plates with Classic registration will be "grand fathered" and may continue to use the YOM plates on their vehicle as long as they renew them. If the customer does not renew within 60 days of expiration, the plates will fall out of the system and can no longer be used on the vehicle. The customer would have to apply for department issued Classic plates, Personalized Classic plates, or regular plates. Another change effective September 1, 2011 with Classic registration and plates is that the $15 fee will no longer be collected. Only regular registration will apply. This law change only effects vehicles with Classic registration. Vehicles with Antique registration may continue to use YOM plates and new applications will still be accepted.
Maybe a stupid question, but is there any chance or risk that Texas will altogether disallow the use of YOM plates? I'm gonna be pissed if they ever did. Took a while and more than a few $'s to find my '27 Texas plates.
Yes, 54 is yellow on black. and 69 is black on reflective white. Get James Fox's book, maybe the Texas DMV should get a copy too.
