Hey guys I'm trying to find a junkyard that will ship overseas. I'm looking for a slant six head that is made of Aluminum. Not a Hemi 6 head. I'd take a whole Hemi 6, but not just a head. Aparently, Chrysler USA never made an aluminum head for the 225, even though they went through a lightening phase & created some AL intakes and ****pier Iron blocks with less ribbing. However some say the ones with 5 freeze plugs are more stout than the 60's blocks with 3 freeze (welsh) plugs. All I know for certain is the early 70's 5 plug with the forged crankshaft is where it's at. I've seen the longram 4bbl intake you guys have over there, very cool, on the list, but I want an Aluminum head to marry it to. PM me with phone numbers or email or physical addys. Post here if you have more info on the slant six! Thanks guys.
I worked at Chrysler Australia from 1966 until 1972 and never saw an aluminum headed slant six. Same with a factory 4 barrel manifold. The first Pacer (VF series-1969) was basically a cosmetic package with a floor shifter for the 3 speed trans. In the following VG series (1970) there were two and four barrel versions of the 245 "hemi" motor but the engine architecture is totally different. Roo
Where did you hear that you could get one over here? I personally have never heard of a factory aluminium head and if you did find one it certainly wouldn't be in a junk yard. It's a rarity these days for anything pre-'80s to still be sitting in a wrecking yard. Someone may have dabbled with an aluminium head for a slant in the old speedway days, but who knows. It would be fairly easy to find an Aussie 245-265ci 'Hemi' 6, but these are a Hemi in name only. There is a company making after-market aluminium head to suit these.
I heard it from a 60 year old man who still works at Chrysler in Detroit. He was selling an experimental manifold for turbocharging the slant six with all Chrysler parts. He knows a lot about 60's to 80's Chrysler. He said the Australian market produced an aluminum head. The block made of aluminum had no deck so there were sealing issues, & made from 61-63. It has no freeze plugs. Other than that it's hard to tell the difference.
There were a scant few aluminum heads made as prototypes - never became a production piece. Don't know exactly how many were made but some went out the back door and are now in the hands of some super serious slant gurus - Doug Dutra (one example) of slantsix.org. I would suggest you go to the Slant Six Forum and nose around for a while. Plenty of Aussie dudes frequent this site as well. Don't want to be a downer but it may be easier to find Jimmy Hoffas body than an aluminum slant head. I have been hesitant to post on the H.A.M.B. because my knowledge is somewhat limited on hot rods - but not on the slant! Hope this helps.
It was actually discussed in a thread within the last month of so. I think that one of the fellas said that the aluminum headed motor was marketed in your part of the world. I don't recall a lot about the thread. I read through it and found it interesting though.
I worked in the engineering group and also in product planning at Chrysler Australia so it would have been pretty hard to slip something like an aluminum head past me--especially as I have been a drag racer since 1965. Roo
It's all myth. An Aussie by the name of Geoff McNiff has been running slant 6s in his S series Valiant for what seems an eternity and i don't ever recall any of his engines with an aluminium head.
