Hi, I have a 62 Galaxie that is making a slight thud, thud, thud sound from the right rear wheel what I am going 5 MPH but the sound seems to go away when i speed up. I don't hear it when I am making a right turn but is very noticeible when I am making a left turn. Is this rear wheel bearing? I've never done the rear bearing before. Do I need special tools? Thanks in advance to whoever helps me out on these questions. Jon
If the noise appears when making a turn in one direction and you don't hear it when making a turn in the other direction ... that would suggest to me that it is either a wheel bearing or possibly a bad tire. If your car is equipped with a 9" Ford rearend the rear axle bearings are on the axle itself ... these bearings are pressed on the axle then held there with a collar that is also pressed on behind the bearing. Nothing exotic as far as tools go, you just need to find someone to press the bearings on using a hydraulic press. The brake backing plates are held on by four bolts, remove those same four bolts and the axle can simply be pulled out of the housing (although it might not be easy to remove being that it has probably been in there since '62). Good luck
bearings usually sound worse with more speed.what kinda if wheels are car.reason i ask is my front wheels on my jeep does this and its the center caps?????
I am leaning towards the bearings. Thanks Borntoloze and mysteryman. The sound did not change when I swapped the tires around. I was hoping it would lol.
