Hey guys, just found out that the bolt pattern on the flywheel from a chevy 216 to the 261 are different, 4 bolt to 6 bolt, yes I'm new to this....and the motor I got didn't have a flywheel included. Was curious if anybody knows if a 235 flywheel uses the same bolt pattern and down pins or do I need a 261 flywheel? If I need a 261 flywheel, anybody know where to get one? Or for that matter even a 235 if that will work? Thanks, Jeff.
'37-'40 Chevy flywheels used a four bolt pattern. Any newer six cylinder flywheel through 1962 will bolt to your 261, but the '55-'62 flywheels use a ring gear with 168 teeth, and must be used in conjunction with a 12 volt starter. All 6 volt flywheels have 139 teeth on the ring gear. P***enger car 'wheels through 1953 used a 9 1/8 inch clutch but, if you find one from a '54 car or light truck, you can use a 10 inch clutch setup. '40s and early '50s heavy duty trucks used an 11 inch clutch, but the flywheels were drilled for an odd 9 bolt pressure plate that's probably getting tough to find.
i had that same issue last year and HEATHEN is right. the four bolt is for a 30's 216. and the chevy and gmc are two driffrent flywheels too so id search for the 261
