I am finishing up my rod and I am trying to get some ideas for my rear end. I have spring coils in the back and everytime I turn it seems that my body is bottoming out. I'm going to add shocks in the rear and I just want to get some ideas. So any pictures you can share would be great. Thanks
bump .I would also like to see different setups. im running a 9inch with a transleaf setup. but its hard finding good pictures of other setups.
My '29 RPU. '72 Pinto 7.5 rear, stock spring with leaves removed and main leaf shortened. Custom perches made to correct a building error when first modified. Rides nice and smooth. What we started with - rode like a deadman spring: What we did to correct the problem - VERY smooth now:
You can also check out the build thread shown in my signature for another setup. I mounted a 9" rear under my '29 Ford AA truck. It's unique and different, and quite ingenious if I do say so myself. Check it out if you want. I'm hoping to drag out the Dubble A in the next day or so and see about getting going on it again.
Run the shocks right up through the springs. ALL cars should have shocks front and rear but especially ones with coil springs. You'd think everyone would know that after seeing some of the old sleds riding around that after hitting a slight rise or slab seam bounce for a half mile or so until they settle down 'cause the shocks are broken, worn out, or gone altogether.
Yeah, you shouldn't be "thinking" about adding shocks, you should be in the process of adding shocks. Personally, I would take those coils and panhard bar out, and put a model a spring back in there.
Don't have any pics of it, but the cleverest Model A rear susp I ever saw was designed by Howard Downing Junior who lives in the Syracuse, NY area. His full-fendered 1930 coupe has won awards everywhere. (See photo). His suspension design has bellcranks and horizontally-mounted coil-over Penske shocks and gives ample travel in a limited space. I'm sure someone, somewhere has photos of it. Downing is an auto engineer specializing in suspension designs. His bellcrank set-up was featured on the Tucci-built grand prize car at the 2003 Syracuse Nats. Here's Downing, Jr's coupe. I'm not certain he still owns it. I took the pic in 2007. Frank C.
