1960 1961 1962 Ford FALCON 6cyl update...?

    I want to do an easy, clean 6-cyl. update on a 1960 Comet wagon to make it a driver.

    I just want to pull out the tired "144" & put in a running 1965 Falcon "170" engine for the time being.

    Q=Who sells the brackets now for the later "6", into an earlier car swap?
    ========================

    (((I guess I'm used to 1955-56 Chevy cars where there's a bracket to do every swap cleanly...But I know I saw this 'kit" in some falcon places when I started looking around last year

    I know I saw the kit to do this late Falcon 6 into an earlier Falcon 6 car switcheroo online @ NW Falcons.
    BUt they are out of business.
    But they didn't manufacture make stuff, so it came from somewhere...?))).

    Hey my memory is really bad, but I thought those two engines (144 and 170) were from the same block, so wouldn't the mounts be the same?

    The blocks were changed in mid 64 which might account for the differences. You could look for a 63 or early 64 200 ci motor since that should be a direct bolt in.

    It's a '65 170 need to put into an earlier car...
    seen the brackets before, but cannot find the kit now...any one?

    Thanks.

    dude, every falcon six has the same block mount bolt pattern so the original design mounts work for this. there is no kit needed. just factory style parts.

    O.K., three things: go to Fordsix.com and look at their tech info page; go check with Cl***ic Inlines.com for hardware, engine mounts, etc.; and buy the "Ford Falcon Six Cyl. Performance Handbook", it can be bought through a link at Cl***ic Inlines.

    That will cover all your variables, newer to older and auto to stick conversions.

    Later, *****6 :cool:

    Except for the 1981-83 200 with an E1BB casting number, any 200 is a bolt in replacement for a 144 or 170. There are some minor differences in water pumps, but externally the engines are pretty much all the same and will interchange. It's the 250 that's significantly different and a lot harder to swap.

    The only other consideration is that the early pre-65 distributor has a larger 5/16" oil pump driveshaft vs the early 1/4" shaft, so you have to use a later distributor with the later engine. Best distributors are '68 and later with mechanical advance.

    The carb base size changed in later years, so an early 144 carb may or may not bolt to the head, but later carbs are easy to find.

    go to www.fordsix.com for more info and a great forum for falcon sixes.

    Maaaannn...I have done al my research on 14" wheel and tires combos that will work and all that for the 1960-63s, but was taking engine swap info. from early Mustang people.
    Should've known.

    That book is on my list of things, now it's gonna be first.
    =======================================
    So pretty much - if I have a 1960 Comet wagon with a 3-speed, and a 1962 with an original automatic and I want to temporarily swap in running later engines I found for sale her ein town...
    (#1=a 1964 170 that was in an auto car,
    and
    #2= 1965 170 that was in an auto car) ...
    both bolt up to either one of my early projects, right?
    =====================================

    ~Then I guess the "kit" I saw last year in some website was probably just marketing.
    ~But I do see 1960-62 motor mounts listed separately from mid 1963-65.
    Gues that's my other confusion on the topic.

    That's kind of what I though I had heard...but I always see the 1960-63s with 170s, and even 200s with no mention of it being anything unusual that they dropped them in there.

    And the one engine I am looking at is 1964, and the other is a 1965 which is why I wondered. Can use them both if they'll fit.
    They both run but don't want to have to do any jerry-rigging. Is there any to do? :)

    I have a newer 200 in my 60 Ranchero. I had it all in my 63 Ranchero before that had a winter meeting with a guardrail. Anyway, the 200 was originally in a 65 Mustang. Now when I moved it to the 60 Ranchero, I moved the 63 frame mounts as well. I used 65 Mustang motor mounts. I run a toploader overdrive behind it using a bellhousing from a 67 or newer Mustang. I think Mavericks used the same bellhousing.

    Your 60 may have the same issues I just dealt with for a transmission crossmember. I ended up getting a Speedway Motors universal 2" drop and doing some fab work as the original crossmember was too far forward for my toploader.

    I don't know what the 60 Falcon or Comet auto trans mount looks like. In the 63 Ranchero, I had a aftermarket C4 mount that I modified to use for the toploader. But all that stuff won't work in a 60 as the crossmember is very different.
