I have another question for you Ford guys. I have a 302 from what i believe is an 85 crown vic. that i have put in my 55 Monterey. I took the fuel injection off and put carb on it. Now I need to know what i need to get a water pump and pulleys for to make it all line up. I am using the old flat triangle shaped bracket that mounts on the p***enger side. I dont know if all the water pumps are the same length or not. I do know i have to have the right rotation for my application. One more thing, I have the AOD behind it and was wondering what trans fluid to use. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you still have all of the original front dress off of the 85? Herb.

If it wasn't a serpentine belt setup then the water pump won't be an issue, (Usually on a serpentine setup water pump runs backwards). Look for pulleys from a 70's 302 and you should be ok. As for ****** fluid Ford Mercon (or Dexron III) is normally used in all AOD’s and Ford now recommends MerconV for the AOD/4R70W.

You will need the old timing chain cover, basically everything from the front of a v-belt 302. You'll end up with an extra dipstick if I remember right I would use the correct d-stick for whatever oil pan you have.

I'm going thru the same process right now on the 302 in our 32 Vicky. Ford made lots of changes so like said above, get all parts off the front of the same motor. I had issues because my 302 is an 89 Australian motor and the water pump is a lot shorter (about 2 1/2") then most 302s. Kinda neat, gives more room in a tight firewall/ radiator leanth but I had a heck of a time finding the waterpump pully. Finally found the 302 Explorer had the same pump so that's a good option if your tight there but it is serpintine. I have to fab all the brackets because of width issues with anything stock, least in your 55 you have a lot more room/ options.

I'm running a 302 out of an 87 Mustang in my 50 shoebox. With all the stock crank and water pump pullies. I used a Summit Racing alternator bracket and adapted a Chevy alternator to fit. I ran the belt like you would with no power steering or ac inn a Mustang. I can take a picture and post if you would like to see how I set it up. Here's the part number for the alternator bracket. Well I got it on the road somewhat. I ended up using some Chevy pulleys. The crank pulley was an early v8 pulley that I had the center mille not for sure what the water pump pulley was off of. Just some stuff I had laying around. A poor man has poor man ways but it works good. Made one of my alternator brackets. Now I need to work on the brakes. It has manual drums which I'm sure many of you know they ****. Thank you all for your help again.

Crowns at that time should have a serpentine belt and a standard rotation water pump. The water pump pulley should be grooved just like the crank and alternator.

Does that use a shorter belt?
