I would just have him re-list it, So if there is a problem e-bay will back you. I bought a car out side of e-bay a few years ago..I got lucky! He was on the other side of the country and was honest....If he wasn't...I knew the name of his company and were it was located..He wouldnt have been hard to find!:D

I have not talked to him yet. He sent the message, through ebay(second chance) and said he would honor my $14k offer.

As I outlined in an earlier post, flying up there would be over a grand. All these opinions are great, but my biggest concern is how to properly transfer the funds and receive the merchandise. In the most trusted fashion.

I bought 2 motorcycles from Ebay ... I put 500 down and paid the rest when I picked up the bike ... your deal sounds a little risky.

  6. Not a car or rod but simply an old soda bottle that I sold for $1,573.00 on Ebay a few years ago. I delivered the bottle personally andthe buyer was very happy. Someone then contacted the second highest bidder THROUGH EBAY and offered up a second chance offer on another bottle that did not exist. The bidder agreed and sent payment for around $900.00. When the bottle didn't show up the bidder emailed me wanting to know where it was.Since I knew nothing about it I told him he had been scammed. I asked where he had sent the payment to....it was somewhere in England. Buddy...I'm in Parry Sound Ontario Canada just like it says in my Ebay info. Guess I'm screwed he finally said.Guess you are. Moral is I'd be talking directly to the guy who had the truck in the auction and not by email. For that much money I would hire someone to verify it actually existed. No cash would change hands until I had it in my posession.

    I'll jump in here...

So, you are willing to risk 14 large on a truck that may or may not exist or that may actually be the one that arrives on the transport but spending a grand is somehow a waste? I dunno, I'm a bit confused by the logic.

"The most trusted fashion"...Is the truck a driver? Then fly up and drive it back. Oh wait, you don't know if it is road worthy after a frame-off and 3000 miles is too far to drive it home?
There are Hambers all through that general area, fly up, buy it, pay for storage with a Hamber and arrange the transport yourself.

Maybe you won the lotto and this is just pocket change.

My buddy had the same thing happen to him on a Hilbourn Injector. He lost $600. I asked him if he checked with ebay regarding the second chance offer. He said, "WHAT?". I told him second change offers look like they came from ebay because they copy ebay's logo and format. If it's legit, he can check through his ebay account.

I got a second chance offer on a car and figured it was a scam. I had kept the original sellers e-mail address and sent him a message. Then I asked the scammer if I could look at the car since it was local. The scammer never got back to me and I gave ebay security the scammers address.

I currently have 2 cars for sale but I will only sale face to face.

just an FYI for Paypal and ebay. As long as the Seller keeps money in the account he uses for Paypal you could be safe if you file a dispute. IF they keep no money in it you will get nothing. I had a paypal go sour, the guy never shipped the stuff, I filed a complaint, Ebay said i was right but they could do nothing because the seller had no money in his paypal account or the bank account used.

    Road Trip!!!

or like said , catch a flight and a rental and go see it up close and personal.

pay and arrange your own shipping., fly or Drive back, (not necessarily in the Truck)

Rick Venza-I had a friend recently waste a week trying to work a deal with the offshore guy-really nice 40's Chevy PU that he put at risk. jjrockbush-why don't you guys at least talk on phone and have him share more photos, etc? have you clicked on the community section here for listing of members and tried to find someone close to where the ride is located and ask for their help? or, do a search for an automobile appraiser in Montana-some can be found at American Society of Appraisers-talk to a couple of them on phone and see if they provide a inspection service before purchase. phone don't hurt.

Thats a fact and I have been on both sides. For out of state stay with in the protected systems of eBay and pay-pal. Only leave these two, if you able to stand there scratch and smell the deal. Otherwise cheaper to buy some vasoline and bend over for a good deal gone bad:(

  13. I think escrow would be okay.. also there are going to be flaws not listed, there always are. there are hambers from Montana who could look at it for ya. i am sure of this.

You have done some good due diligence as far as checking the guy out....I have never used an escrow service so cant vouch for that...but as far as buying it through Ebay or using Paypal because that ensures a successful deal or that you would have efficient recourse on your part is false. Ebay cannot make a car/truck appear, or force the seller to do anything. Paypal might side with you in a dispute but their decisions are meaningless if the seller has bad intentions. All he has to do is close accounts or not keep money in Paypal as others have said. I will say what others have said above...have a HAMB brother at least lay eyes on it for you..talk to the guy...or at worst an posted above, hire an automobile appraiser in the area to look at it for you. The appraiser might function as your agent to handle the deal...might only cost a few hundred bucks..but might give you peace of mind. If it was less dough my opinion might be different...

Mate, a frame off resto truck for 15 grand .......if I couldn't drive it home, wouldn't want it. Cant get one closer for round same price? Have you spoken to anyone at Quality Automotive, where a lot of the work was done.
As an aside, whats so unique about the grill?
Good luck, but I wouldn't touch it without running a magnet over it. IMO

More due diligence.....in his ad he mentions a shop that rebuilt the engine and tranny. A quick google shows that they also exist. I called, but I think it was around 5:30 their time, so I got a machine. I am not really that hesitant about the vehicle. The listing looks pretty solid. I still have not got a return call.

My question remains....what is the prudent way to transfer funds.

One reply here suggested I not pay until I receive the truck....riiiiight. I have bought and sold tons of stuff on ebay. I have bought and sold lots and lots of firearms on the internet. The money always goes first. Anybody ever try to buy a machine gun? Usually half down, send paperwork to the ATF, once it is approved, you send the other half, THEN they send the weapon. I have been through all this before. Just not a vehicle and not with ebay.

    Wiring money...no good...you can't get it back.
Paypal...no good...if he flakes they have no real enforcement.
Cashiers checks...no good...same as wiring the money.

The most prudent way is to hand him cash in person, or to appoint an agent, whether it is a HAMBER, escrow company, or someone that can handle the deal for you. These are the safest ways..other ways might work..but if the deal goes sideways the road/hoops to getting your money back are nearly endless...and there is a real possiblity you might not get it back at all.

Maybe just tell them that you collect machine guns...that might keep him honest!

ive bought and sold on ebay for 10 years now with only a couple problems. make the guy list the truck with a "buy it now" price so the whole thing is in writting so to speak, that way you'll be covered on it.

  20. When I sold an OT sports car a couple of years ago, the long haul driver coming to haul it to the new owner paid me cash in exchange for the car and the title. The buyer arranged the transportation. All I had to do was be home when the truck pulled up at the front door.

JJROCKBUSH, I think If you buy that truck, or better yet buy it and try to drive it home, It could go down in history as the greatest thread ever on this board.

no bull shit - I fell for a similiar "escrow" scam 63 Rivi

price went from 12.5k....and kept coming down - he eventailly agreed to do $4500

odd thing was I ccould only veiw the ebay item on my home computer - I must have installed a "cookie" or something on my computer

he even chatted with me via a fake ebay help line

his feedback was good - but you could not "see" the items - only the "glowing" reviews

also you could not "watch" item - he had good reasonable answears for everything - I felt pretty foolish - tunnel vision - it was a nice car!

becareful - if it's too good to be true it might be!

i came to my senses and never sent any dough

please excuse me if someone else have written a similiar story - i just replied to the end

you may be fine - others just watch out - better safe than sorry

I don't trust second chance offers....That can be anybody trying to scam you! I believe e-bay warns of second chance offers.

Can only say what happened to me. Bought a Snap-on Plasma Cutter on Ebay thru paypal. They shipped it (UPS) in an ordinary cardboard box, and it arrived quite damaged. I made the mistake of throwing out the torn up carton,so UPS claimed no responsibility. After many months neither Ebay or Pay pal were able to locate the seller and repairs were on me. Guess i'm lucky to have received it at all!

    From Ebay...

If you're not able to complete the sale with the winning bidder or if you have duplicate items for sale, you can send a Second Chance Offer to anyone who bid on your listing. You won't be able to send an offer to the winning bidder. The number of offers you can send depends on the quantity of duplicate items you selected to offer. For example, if you have 4 duplicate items, you can send offers to up to 4 bidders. When you send a Second Chance Offer, the bidders you've sent the offer receive a message asking if they'd like to buy the item at a Buy It Now price equal to their last bid amount. It's up to the buyer to decide whether to accept the offer.

It is a function of the Ebay process....have you ever sold anything on Ebay?

I absolutely agree that you NEED to get on a plane and fly out there to see it, in person, yourself. Best to hook up a trailer and take a road trip. A few days on the road can prevent a lifestime of disappointment. For a few thousand it may be worth the gamble, but not for any amount higher than that. Be cautious, he may be 100% legit, but why take a chance? If he's on the level, he will understand your concerns. Keep us updated.

I'm a regular on the eBay Motors Discussion Board (same user name as here) and we still miss 49ratfink...very knowledgeable and helpful..

Not only does vehicle purchase protection not cover any problems that can be seen in a personal inspection, as 49ratfink noted, but it doesn't cover any damage, period, to any vehicle over ten years old.

    http://pages.ebay.com/ebaymotors/buy/purchase-protection/index.html

Also vehicles are NOT covered under paypals' purchase protection...see section 13.3 below

    https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?.../UserAgreement_full#13. Protection for Buyers.

So basically, you're not covered by either eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection plan or Paypal's Purchase Protection.

You could go to escrow.com (https://www.escrow.com, making sure to include the "s" after http) I suppose. But eBay itself never handles money between buyer and seller.

  30. I threw a couple of bids on ebay on a camaro that did not sell for $35k. I received a 2nd offer thru ebay for the $10k I did put on it. They said they would accept my offer. But when pushed to view the car as well as an email to the original seller the emails stopped. This guy could have hijacked the ad and started fishing for some quick money. All the stuff may be legit in the ad but the links for payment etc. could be to route money somewhere else. I'd at least be trying to contact this guyin person from the original ad. Also try accessing from a different computer to see if the 2nd offer is thru your ebay account as well.
