I am thinking of trying to put 3 point seat belts in my 64 FLCON Hardtop, I know 4 point would be easier and prob safer, but I am asking iF anyone has installed the 3 point and if you like them and the comfort level. I know you convertible guys have an opinion Thanks in advance
If you're going the route of modern cars there are many seatbelt companies out there that can provide the length, color and style of belt you desire. Just be sure the B pillar support is adequately welded and the appropriate height. Measure modern cars for ideas. For your car you could take a good look at the late 60's Mustangs for ideas. I had a four point sertup in my car for almost a whole day. Tossed it in the afternoon cuz I couldn't turn in the seat to look over my shoulder for lane changes and such. Just too restricitive in my opinion. HTH....Steve http://seatbelts.net/
I used lap sash in my 66 Fairlane convertible because I could, however in Australia now retractable belts are mandatory in just about every import these days and all hot rods and modified cars. I've helped a friend do his Mustangs and we use a 3mm plate with bolt boss and fit it to the upper rear boxed section of the rear window panel at the door jamb to comply with engineering requirements. It's a pain to trim and fit but once there you wouldn't know. We also insert a similar plate in the boxed section of the lower sill panel for the lower mount and attach a similar under floor plate for the buckle near the transmission tunnel. A small price for safety and wearing seat belts here is mandatory as well if installed.
On my O/T Chevelle I wanted a 3/4 point harness using a 3" belt. I did not want to install a roll bar to mount it. I used heavy duty thread and sewed the shoulder belt to the factory retracting belt. ( yes, we tested it by pulling a car with it first) Worked and looked great and I could move around in the seat.
