Great story Ryan ! I love the history behind the pictures I have stared at from the other side of the world. Dale Velzy was definitely a hot rodder. He bought Al Andril's 1940 Mercury in the early fifties. Velzy's first glasser, Bev Morgan drove the Chevy in the following photos. The last photo was taken in Velzy's garage in Hermosa Beach,1949. Check out the roadster on the right.
Cal Tanaka is one of the biggest Hot Rodders and Surfers you'll ever meet........and if he ain't drinkin beer he ain't awake.....Love 'em
Neat story. I would also love more pics of that little truck, love Cad motors. Funny how the family big picture plans happened anyway.
I forgot about Tyler - is he a hamber? Think he's in Australia right now shaping / promoting his boards.
If you want to see what is was like to live in So Cal in the 60s,watch the old frankie and annette beach movies LOL.
Cool thread. I've always loved the surf culture, but being in O-hi-ya doesn't lead to much surfing. I did learn to surf on vacation at 45 years stupid, so now every chance I get, I go to the beach and surf. There's no feeling like surfing, it's like flying. Longboards forever!
Reminds me of a thread from some time ago with a lot of pictures of young guys/gals on the beach drinking beer, campfires etc. Looks to be from late 50/early 60 maybe ??? Anybody remember this thread ??
Check this link out it's from The Selvedge Yard a blog I like to follow.... http://theselvedgeyard.wordpress.co...-liver-chronicler-of-california-surf-culture/
drop in, crank hard bottom turn, top turn............. roll to stop light, rev to the moon, dump clutch.............. surf all day drag all night.
yup, i'm one of those guys. surf. cars. women. in that order. here's one of my very missed little surf transport devices....'62 Falcon Ranchero aka "the little dude" and a pic of my ugly mug on the way to surf in a modern surf transport device....whatever gets me to the water i suppose. I'd wanna swallow a shotgun if was landlocked like most of you guys
Your right...I dont get all of this not cool because it has discs on it? come on isnt it about the cars? Hot Rods and Surf have always gone together...I've had and used them since I could drive and still do. Drop the Fonzie cool BS and start enjoying that all this stuff still runs and drives and make it about wahts cool and whats not...you may not be cool next year, next fade and if you roll into a line up and start talkin shit, your libel to find out..some surfers arent peaceful folk...So have those tradtional brakes slow your roll and let other do theeir thing..Wil for Sadowski's knows what I am talking about.
Hi Yes. I am hoping the current owner will restore it the way it used to be in the 60's It has a cool wooden surfboard dash. Wil
Hi I don't know how I got into this but I have been trying really hard to stop grabbing people's leashes as they try to drop in in front of me, and I have hot rods with disc and drums both. I like the drum look, but when you are flying up the 405 at 90 mph at the speed of traffic with your boards strapped to the top and someone cuts in front of you and slams the brakes... then discs rule. No doubt. I am sure it was just a joke about the discs. Anyway. As long as there are boards on top, that is all that matters. Sounds like everyone needs a good wave. Back to great surf history.
