Customs So I've had this old car for awhile

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by porknbeaner, Jun 26, 2011.

  1. But I haven't got around to snapping any pics yet.
Anyway the wife and I were up on the farm yesturday she hadn't seen the car yet and I thought it would be a good time seeing as how it is her car.

Here is the back story on it. I at one time belonged to an old shine runner in Tennesee, or so the story goes. It has been road hard and put up wet but it is in remarkably good shape. The fella that I got it from a fellow HAMBer said he dug about a foot of gravel and mud out of the floor boards. That may be an exageration but it was coated pretty well. Further evidance of its time spent on the back roads are a hairline crack along the belt line on both sides about 10" long. It had definately seen some hard use.

Almost no rust to speak off. It was blue at one point as seen on the under side of the deck lid, it appears to have been green and black at some point.

Anyway here is a pic or two.

  4. Well there are a couple of pics.

Oh I'll bet you would like to see the whole car wouldn't you. :D:D

    Well alright.

    Uh here is the dash

And a couple from the front and the back

I really like the split back glass. I am not sure why btu that really folats my boat on this era Ford.

And here is a side shot of the old boat.

And just for grins here is an over exagerated photo shop of what we would like to do with it.

Very cool car, Benno. I like the photoshop- Have you thought about a color choice?

  14. Yea I am thinking LS somethin or other, 22" hoops and rubber band tires.

Believe it or not there was a fenderless '38 sedan street rod we saw back in the 90s that was pretty cool as fenderless later '30s go. Tube A arms hidden coil overs chopped to the max and about 3" of ground clearance. I think it was more of a fairgrounds cruiser and they had to avoid speed bumps but it was nice to look at.

Actually it is getting a late model engine, but with the correct rocker covers maybe no one will notice.

Thinking tan a ford color type of tan. The wife prefers lighter colored cars, not pastel lighter colored cars but lighter colored cars.

Actually the color thing is a little lost on me. I don't see colors as well as other folks. Probably why I think that most hot rods are either black or ugly.

  18. Naw I just wanted to screw his car. Actually now that I look at the pics it may be a little sway backed, I'll have to get it off the chassis and give it a good look. Maybe it is just the angle of the lense.

Any aged shine come with it??????

  22. Always liked the '38 Standard front end styling. Great car to build, love the shine runner history on it. My father told about getting picked up by a shine runner in a '40 Ford coupe when he was hitchhiking back to Ft. Benning in his Army days. The shine runner was travelling on business and had a load to deliver, but he was a WWI vet who wouldn't leave a soldier on the side of the road--he delivered Daddy to Ft. Benning before he delivered the shine to Phenix City.

I like everything about those cars except that ugly after-hump off the back end. I love a nice slick backed car, and given a righteous chop, it'd be smoothed together and blended into one.

However, it isn't my car. LOL. I like what you're planning to do with it, as they are slick old rides. Should be an awesome start - gotta keep momma happy so we can keep up with our own projects.

I like the photoshoped photo, reminds me of a 1936 coffin nosed Cord at first glance. Did Ford offer a sland back in 1938?

  26. Once it is aged it is no longer shine.

Funny thing about that for whatever reason my daughter really liked "Grease" when she was a little girl. One day when she was in highschool she was watching a rerun on TV and all at once when Travolta was hoochy coochyig all around in his best elvis impresssion and singing about the car she jumped up and hollered "hey that car is called greased lightning". I guess she thought it was called White Lightning all her life and couldn't figure out why the pizza face thought he could out run an alchy burner with his jalopy. :D

Are you seeing the red X's? Cause from where I'm sitting.......:p:D:p:D

  28. Actually Gotz we both kinda like a hump back but I am going to have to look long and hard before I make a cut, I am thinking that I want to lay the back glass down a little smooth the roof into the hump a little better.

I am not as good with photo shop as some if the fellas, the fenders are actually raised a little more than I plan in the photo chop and there is no doubt a little more chop than it is actually going to get. I'm thinking about 2-2.5" chop and the fenders only raised as much as the thickness of the running boards. like about 2.5-3".

The idea is a wink and a nod to the early customs. That being because we are using an FE that the wife has instead of a souped up flatty. She has about a '66 390 the one that came factory with the 427 heads. Probably if mean gene was on here he could actually nail down the proper year for that particular engine. They used them in the mustang/fairlane sized bodies. We are not leaning toward low and slow like the later customs became.

    37 kid,
I think that did offer a flat back sedan on '38, but don't hold me to that. I recall seeing one before but it could have been a '37 with a '38 title. You would have to ask one of the fellas more versed in all things ford than I am to get a real answer on that.

  30. You bet. Gotta do something with your time.

A long time ago I helped a fella named Luther put his still back together after the County Sherrif busted it up. That's a long story that i'll tell you someday when we are driving around in a Ford that one or the other of us owns. :D Anyway long story short Luther passed back in the '80s and his wife handed me his recipe at his funeral. I gotta give it a whirl. ;)
