This is my 60, lowered about as far as it could go by heating the coils up. It was sitting on the jounce bumpers. I've since bagged it and removed the jounce bumpers and it likely sits about another 1-2 inches lower when air all out.
really? static (as an adjective) meaning fixed (or non moveable unlike bags), common term in car scene, thatd be any non-bagged type of drop, ie. drop spindles or coils
It rode actually pretty good. It was a bit stiffer than original, but also keep in mind it was on the jounce bumpers. Now with the bags in it, it rides really nice, except for when I air it out completely. (no jounce bumpers anymore, so it's a bit rough).
Read every Post on the HAMB that you have contributed, then read every Post on the HAMB that he has contributed.......then decide if he's someone you should be a wise*** to, or someone you should listen to and actually learn stuff about kool old cars from. Blokes on here were slamming old 60s chevys before you were born, so you don't need to 'school' them on the latest term 'the scene' uses to describe something as simple as lowering a coil sprung car. If you're not smart enough to figure out how to cut the springs an old car without reaching out to the internet, then it goes double. That's how the HAMB works. I hope you get as much out of the HAMB as I have and enjoy. MIJ
JMSMILIN--welcome to the H.A.M.B. I'll warn you--you are in a different crowd than thesamba.com offers.. Watch your tongue around here, and so some reading of the FAQ's. It's not a membership forum, but there are guys here who know ****.. Don't let your age make you look like a douche..
You know, "static", as in, a redundant statement. As in, once you build your car to sit at it's ultimate, most *****in' stance, you find you can still drive it without the need of silly adjustable suspension systems, static.
That's why they invented this smiley. Now on to the question at hand. I wish I had a picture to show you but alas it was from when I was a kid. Jose owned the "World's Lowest Chebby" it was a '59 2 door hard top. There was just enough clearance to go over Camel pack front and rear. It road a little rough but the seats were comphy. You could tell it comming up the road at night because the heaqdlights jiggled a little. Today the problem with one that is low to the point of s****ing is that we now have speed bumps and sometimes can't get over them. But with a little creative driving you can still get around.
This is dropped w/ stepped A-arms (2") and soft aftermarket 2" coils that settled into 3" inch for a near 5 up ft. The rear is a heavy 4" w/ 2 wraps cut. It's low. the lower control arms are just over 3".
Car in my avatar is, well, pretty low. Cut coils front and rear for about a 4" drop, otherwise stock suspension set up. I've got less than 3" between the frame and the pavement. I added pictures below to help show the stance. The car rides OK - sure as hell not a caddy. Speed bumps, especially when loaded, are something I avoid when possible. I do get the occasional at speed "ka-BANG" is it's a nasty pothole or huge pavement joint. Honestly, a change to 15" rolling stock and just slightly taller tires would give me clearance, although the ride would remain the same. I am considering putting 2" drop spindles and lowering springs in to give the car a bit better ride, but keep the same stance. And FWIW, the car originally had a 230 L6, and now has a 292 L6 in it.
Stock / old springs in back - one coil cut in front. Hits the bump stop in front on a bigger road hole. I like the way it sits, and the ride is good. My hair is short , so I don't have a problem with static.
Thats pretty cool.Do you step both of them or just the lower?Do you lose any strength in the control arm?
Just the lowers. And it is good to go, provided the welder/fab man is good at what he does. Mine have held up fine. So Low in Portland, OR did the work for the Impala. Their reputation is solid. You do not lose shock length w/ this or spindle's. Add a rear sway bar to your car someday, it really helps.
On my '59 I've installed 2" spindles and cut 2 coils front & rear. It's just a bare ch***is now waiting on the engine & trans to be installed before slapping it all back together. I'm pretty sure it's going to be too low to drive... but it'll look good while I wait for new springs to arrive. JH
thats a lot of ***umptions, if you think # of internet posts = some sort super devine status Id say you are the one that needs a reality check
dont let your posts or ego make you look like a douche, I just have a few questions, leave the sarcasm out - youve been online too long
I chopped 2 1/2 out of the front coils and 2 out of the rear. They were new coils, no a big fan of heating or cutting old coils, never know how they might hold up. Wagon rides great and still has some decent size 15's on it.
What kind of coil spring compressor are you guys using?I rented one from autozone and it scared the **** out of me!I ended up having to cut 2 coils out of each spring to get them back in there.
