I wanted to get some feedback from you guys. I am converting to power steering in my 51 Mercury. This is a frame off so now would be the easiest time to do the install. I have a 1977 F 150 steering box, the HAMBer I got it from took it out of a truck in the junk yard. My question is this: A. How do check it B. What is needed to rebuild one- special tools etc B. A "rebuilt" one life time warranty is $135.00 should I go that route C. If I buy the rebuilt one what is the best year? Thanks for the help!
a rebuild kit is about $20 bucks from what i remember. doesnt require any special tools other than some snapring pliers i think. just dont rip the seals or you'll be doing it all over again! im lazy anymore i think i would pay the 135 bucks and call it done plus you have the lifetime warranty....
That is the way I was headed. The body is off the frame so this is the time to do it! Th life time warranty may not apply since it is not on a "truck". But still it is better that a crap shoot! Is one year better that another?
no they are all the same from 73-79 i think it is. not sure why they might void a warranty as far as they know you have a yellow 74 f100 shortbed with a dented fender!!
Use our complete mounting kit (#2233, see it at website www.butchscoolstuff.com) and it will be a simple bolt-on for you. It comes with all the special mounting bolts, illustrated instruction sheet, etc. Just file the raised spline out of your Merc Pitman Arm and it will bolt on the F-100 Power Steering Gearbox. Butch
Can anyone tell me if the F150 box used in this conversion is a 2wd or a 4wd I have seen both mentioned in other post ....
Im going small blk chevy and was wondering if you guys did the same and if so what power steering hose did ya use to go from chevy pump to ford box ,, Im just trying to save time at the parts store or having to find a shop to make one
A 77 thru 79 f-250 or350 4x4 fits best, the f-100 box is taller so colum has to be lower in car.4x4 box is same as factory box in height ,a little longer to front ,needs small notch in frame.
Yes they fit. The price on any 4x4 box is about twice the price as the 2wd from a store..if you take your time everything fits nice under the hood. The column should be shortened though
yes ,pitmanarm same, use colum from chev van no mods needed, can even find early 80s late 70s that dont have ign.switch in colum.a little more work, but a lot better look.
Thanks guys ,,, great info ,, confirmed everything I was already planning to always good to hear it from guys who have been around it !!!!! The infomation on the HAMB is amazing !!!!!
