The starter on my inline Chevy 261 went today. Trying to decide if i should get a remanufactured one from NAPA or have the existing one rebuilt at the local starter repair shop. Anyone know of a ballpark cost of having a starter rebuilt? I called the shop and he couldn't give me a figure over the phone. It is a half hour drive each way so trying to see if it is worth the drive or not.

    Thanks

The local rebuider here usualy runs around $150 to do a starter for our forklifts
usualy a rush job and import brands, would think a Chevy should run a little less.

I always rebuild the one it came with no matter what it costs.....
That way I know it fits...

I prefer a local rebuild, then you can make sure they use good quality parts. If done correctly they should last a good long time.

Auto Zap and Advance have lifetime warranties.
For my Smallblock I tell them it's for a Hi-Po engine or a HD truck. I swap them out every few years because my "Hoodless" 39' they gets rusty and ****py after a while. On my other smallblocks they last longer. Ask them if they have a (6 cyl.) truck starter and make sure it's lifetime warranty.

  6. Starters are super simple machines. Unless your armature is cooked get a set of brushes and bearings, clean everything up good and do a little redneck-rebuild on it yourself.

I just had my starter for my 261 rebuilt at a local rebuild shop and they charged me $100.There are things that they do to them that you can't do at home. They recut the armature and do a growler test to name a few.I looked into buying a parts store starter but they didn't have any in stock and you just can't trust them .....I hate doing things twice or getting stuck someplace...PAUL

  9. usually it takes about $5.00 worth of parts off the shelf, bushings, brushes,
give it a new solenoid, i sometimes repair them by turning the bolt and putting in a new disc
if you have a bad part, field coils and case or a bad armature many other GM parts will fit, using your end housing and using heavy duty[long] parts can increase your cranking power
they were made to be repaired and it is not that hard to do:D

guess i went to tech school in 1963 and rebuilts ****ed then and i still think some are junk
