Are there any advantages/disadvantages to running the hub on the inside or the outside of new repro drums for early ford brakes?? I am just about to buy a set and want to know of any pittfalls! I have already been told the deal on not pressing out the old studs. I have both inner and outer hubs for the rear, but only outers for the front. Thanks in advance! Tom
The suppier/vender should be able to tell you if you need to reinstall the new drums on the outer or inner portion of the hubs. I think if you would remount as they are dismounted.
You can get either style drum from one of the antique auto parts dealers like Mac's. Just make sure you get the correct drum for the style of hub you are using. I made a tool from 1 1/2" pipe to back-up the flange on my hubs and press the studs out. A little heat and pressure on the drum and the hub comes right out.
At the present time the better(USA)repro brake drums mount over the Hub (1940-46 design). The newer 1947-48, 51a style ( mount inside hub), repro drums were from Argentina an exhibited some out of balance issues with the units. Also note that when purchasing replacement drums you will have to purchase longer replacement lug studs.
I thought all the drums are the same casting, just machined for different hubs.....I will check that out when I see them.
There is likely no advantage at all other than a manufacturing one at the Ford factory. All hubs had the drum attached, outside or inside, by swedging the lug studs for convenience on the ***embly line.
