straight six engine identification help

hey guys, im from the uk and need to fill out a fair amount of paper work to get my 59 apache registered. im having trouble finding the correct info to find what model my engine is, i believe its a 235.

ive done a search and read on the codes etc but nothing seems to match what ive got.

this is the engine code off of the machine plate on the engine b3525r

then from behind the starter motor i found c0114 j247

and on teh head b5784b850

any help would be great.

The numbers you show don't make much sense except for the J247 which looks like a date code for Oct 24 1957 if it is a 235.

What do you mean by machine plate? There should be a machined surface just behind the distributor with some letters and numbers. It is usually longer than what you show from the "machine plate."

I don't know if the block casting numbers moved after 1955 but before that they were between the pan flange and the cast ridge just above the flange up front between the fuel pump and the plate sticking out that holds the timing gear cover. Unless you have washed the engine you will need a wire brush to get the grease off. The numbers will be smaller than most casting numbers.

 

Can you post pictures of the numbers? The stamped numbers near the base of the distributor would tell what the engine was installed in originally, but we'd expect it to be something like F1026A the numbers you listed don't look right.

The casting date J 24 7 on the block is helpful...see if you can find a similar number sequence on the head, probably under the valve cover.

 

if it has a 'machine plate' rivited to the engine it was remanufactured.

 

theres a section on the block thats a plat serface, which i take was machined flat from factory and has numbers stamped init. i will check again when i get home and post photos. thanks for your help.

will try and get some decent photos when i get home mate, i didnt think the numbers look right from what i found on the engine and see on the threads on here.

I think he's referring to the machined surface at the base of the distributor, where the engine number is stamped. There are different meanings for the word "flat" and there's an ocean between us and the engine....

That number pad has been ground and restamped, which is why the numbers don't make sense.

Looks like it's probably a 58 truck engine, or a 58 car engine, depending on whether or not it has the 3 mounting bosses on each side of the block. Cars used them, trucks did not. Also cars had hydraulic lifters, trucks had solid.

You could probably get away with saying it's the original engine, I really doubt the inspectors could tell, either way.

These three (they would be on both sides of the engine block). They sometimes had them on truck engines, usually not.

There is a good chance that the engine was replaced at one time or another but it was replaced with a stock engine so that shouldn't be an issue.

 

Isn't the 850 a 261 head? Look for the "captain's bars".

Its a 235 in the pics. Full oil pressure system. Fits 54 thru 62 car and truck. Good motors. Just a question. Why is everyone so hung up on numbers? I thought that was for the muscle car resto nuts. Just checking. Sorry if I offend anyone.

 

thanks for definatly confurming. in the uk we have strange regulations on imported vehicles and lots of paper work when we have to "register" a car. so i had to identify what i have, engine number, dates etc.

 

The numbers only tell you what it is, that's all. How do you know the picture is not a 261??
