I have a 54 AD truck that I purchased from a fellow HAMB'ER that I am updating the driveline on. After getting into it, I found out that it has the small pattern transmission in it, telling me at least that the bell housing and trans is from a car. The engine is a full pressure oiler, so I will ***ume the entire engine, bell housing and trans was swapped out somewhere in it's previous life. My question is, what type of mounts did the 54 Chevy Truck have? I know it had the rear bellhousing ear mounts (which are gone due to car bell housing), but the crossmember is still there. It seems that the car crossmember for the rear trans mount was added as well. Currently the front motormounts are the side mounted tower type using the 3 hole side mounts in the block. I dont think these are stock, as the mounting looks ****py. Did the 54 Chevy truck have the front timing cover mount or the side mounts? I have found a truck bellhousing and am going to put that back in with the rear mounts as I am converting to a T5. I would like to get things cleaned up and mounted properly. Any pics of the motormount ***emblies on a 54 chevy truck would be appreciated, all I can find are V8 conversion pics. Thanks
54 trucks used the same rear bellhousing mounts as the 55-59 trucks. The front mount was unique to 54-55/1 trucks, apparently. I think it was a pad that mounted under the plate behind the timing cover. This info is from the 59 chevy parts book. They don't have any illustrations of the front mount.
Thanks squirrel. I will look to see if that plate exists on this motor. I may just have to clean up the tower mounts and go from there, as I do not want to swap a timing cover at this point.
The '54 trucks did indeed use the front motor mount and I don't think a '54 truck engine had the side bosses. You might run the casting and stamped numbers on your engine as it likely has been replaced.
Took all the front sheet metal off last night, got the block casting numbers, 3835911 which translates to a 53-55 235. I think someone just took the mounts, engine, bellhousing and trans and swapped them in.
yup. That's the case. Stick with the side mounts or you'll have to pull the balancer and timing cover to install the front plate. It's not worth the trouble in my opinion. Just clean up what you've got and run it. My only concern is the new bell housing mount may cause the motors mounts to not be located correctly. But even then you can just rework the side mounts.
It does have the plate behind the timing cover but no holes, can this just be drilled? Anyone done this?
Yes. Just drill it to match the rubber motor mount that is stock 1954 truck. A lot easier than screwing with those side motor mounts, and yes the 1954 Chevrolet truck engines did have the side mount bosses but they were not drilled and tapped.
If you decide to run the front mount there's a good tech article over on stovebolt.com on what you'll need to do, part numbers for the biscuit, bolt sizes, etc. even a template there with dimensions.
