I've looked through the posts with pics of nice welds-nice work guys. My question is when you **** weld two pieces of sheetmetal, should the backside look just like the side you welded it from? Sometimes I get small spots where you can still see the edge of the metal, not enough weld penetration, right?
Correct, when you have full penetration you will not see the edge of the metal. When **** welding sheet metal together you should leave about a .030 gap between the two panels. This will insure you have full penetration. Otherwise when you grind the weld flat the spots that don't have 100% penetration it will crack.
Hate to sound like a tard, but how exactly do you come up with .030 gap? that is roughly the thickness of what?
Eastwood and Harbor frieght both sell some **** weld clamps that give you the proper gaps and hold the panels in place
when i use my mig to **** weld panels i fit the patch tight to the opening with no gap. With the right heat setting and wire speed i get great penetration. There was a pretty good discussion on this on the metal meet forums most claimed no gap was the right method. When i learned to gas weld in high school we did the same.P***ed the bend test every time.
That's what I thought. Sometimes I guess I get excited about how well it's going and start to rush. I guess I gotta just slow down. Thanks guys!
You're still doing it. What are you welding? What are you welding it with? You can't get an answer without details.
the gap should be no bigger than a pubic hair. I always have a bunch on hand when doing any **** welding.
