I think 6 inches to the bolt centers would be good. There is no set rule on what it should be.

I've never read anything on it but my thinking is the spring should be held tight in the center. Keeping the spring from rocking side to side. This lets each side work independantly.

When you say stock type spring, for what year?
Say the year and someone can measure a stock rear for you.
    If it's a 40 I can help.

    Mart.

EDIT: read it in the title: Model A.

I welded mine at 49.5 if you go much wider than that it gets you really close to the backing plate for the brakes. what type of weld on perches are you using?

I'm installing new rear spring perches on my '31 Tudor now. I'm runnin' a stock boxed frame w/'36 banjo, reverse eye posies spring and Pete & Jake shackles. Posies recommended to me 48-1/2" to center of perch sleeve on a spring over setup using the model A style perch and could go up to 49-1/2. Installed and at rest with weight of car the shackles should sit at approx. a 45* angle. Good luck, Jeff

well, the rear settled and became to low, to stiff, and the shackles hung wrong. thats why i re-did the rear..... i set up the spring first , then shortend the rear "Z". I didnt compair the spring befor and after...because i was starting over at that point.

thanks guys, looks like 49.5 is a safe number for 6 leafs and a little lower stance. won't be getting to that for a week or so, any more info is always appreciated, thanks again, John.
p.s. not sure whos perches they are, they came in trade with the "A".
