If you do, then in the new just out issue, you would see a low buck budjet race car built in the World Famous Bomb Factory in Livermore, California, by the race team headed up by Terry, Tim, and the infamous Sam Strube. His current digger is showcased in the center of the magazine and billed as the Wednesday Night Special. Very good 6 page spread by Pat Ganahl. If you have not seen it, go get yourself a copy. Of course, those who were at the first H.A.M.B. drags have seen this little car and what it did on a Racefab built raffle motor. Jim
I haven't dug into my Hot Rod yet this month, but I find I spend more time inbetween the pages of my Car Craft these days... Hot Rod just seems to be more targeted towards the "money-coming-out-their-***" crowd, not all of it, but a lot. Car craft has three good articles this month, the one I'm on right now (the mag is at work... for those much needed breaks) is about these two brothers reviving/building/racing these two old Pontiac Tempests... neat ****. What was the question again?
Thanks, Jim...You reminded me Mrs Rocky dropped my new HRM on my desk yesterday while I was concentrating on the HAMB and then she added to the pile. I just found it under about 3 LBS of useless bills. There is Sam, in living color, no less! Congrats on the ink, Sam..........
You know, I quit Car Craft for much the same reason a few years back. Maybe I'll pick up an issue and see what changes have come about. I had quit Hot Rod, too. But, I see it coming back to "Gr*** Roots" racing and rodding some. And the price was right, and it came with this cute little cap. I t just goes with my new sneakers so well.
i've been diggin hot rod alot lately, format, content, it's really impressed me. gonna subscribe i think. it was nice to see our "gang colors" in print. if you look closely, there's a HAMB shirt in that article. gotta check out car craft, i dug the blue coupe axle had in rod and custom a while back. HAMB: the "supersecret world ********** conspiracy" of the car magazine world.
They have been up and down, but, lately, have been getting much, much better. Back to basics. I like that. I really loved the traditional/ratrod/suede cars featured in the last couple of issues. I think the new editor is doing a great job and must be getting good back-up from his management. I'll definitely renew my subscription. Sure, some of the stuff is expensive, but, if you like parts of it, you can always figure out how to do it yourself for a tenth the cost. .
Yep, and there's a Circle City Hot Rods T-shirt in there too! (those were planned) Pat did a good job on the article, and it was fun hanging out with him talking hot rods... but HRM left a lot of his words on the cutting room floor. Left out Freds (RACEFAB) name, and Ron Carpenters. Fred did the motor for the HAMB... and Ron Carpenter is a good friend of ours, and built most of the body... THEN went with us to MOKAN! Overall it's a neat article, neat layout... and gets the point across quickly, which was masterfully wrapped up at the end with Pat's last sentence. Sam.
There is a lot of mag bashing that goes on from time to time, but I think Hot Rod is returning to where it should have been all along. I was interested in the article because I remembered the car from the beginning and had seen it in person in its first incarnation. I remember it being a group effort and it was nice that the H.A.M.B got mentioned in the article since there were quite a few folks from the board that were involved in one way or another. Congrats to Sam for bringing it together. Jim.
That's good to know. I had gone off of them for a while due to both poverty and disinterest. I really used to enjoy them though and would be thrilled to see them broaden their coverage, which it sounds like they're doing. For a while it was just too many Chevelles, Camaros, and really late models for my taste. Those cars can be cool but as a steady diet they got to be a bit of a turn off. Congrats to Sam and the boys for helping to return some 'roots' to the publication.
Hot Rod has definitely been geting better-no so much Rice Rocket stuff as five years ago but more real hotrod stories. And at only 75 cents a copy(@ year subcription is $18)) it's hard not to find something that is useful.
