So I'm going to check out a 58 Edsel Ranger 2 door hardtop today. The guy says that he wants to at least get what the crusher would pay. What I'd like to know, is how much that would be. I know its up to the local s**** yard as to their rate, but approximatelyl, how much is an Edsel worth as s****. It is complete with engine and trans. Yes, I plan to bring it home as a future project or trade, just wondering how much to pay the guy. Thanks
If it's not buildable please get it to part to us Edsel freaks here. I would be sad to see it go to s****. S**** price here in mo is about $235/ton.
Get the 9" Ford out from under it. Cut the top sheetmetal off if it's not damaged because it makes damn excellent top fill material on a Model A if you want flat. Y-block engine? There should be enough parts to justify spending some money.
call a few local metal yards and see what they pay for s****. Prices vary considerably depending on where you are. Beware that s**** yards don't hem and haw over the price, they buy whatever comes in the gate, right now. So act fast.
Last week shred steel was going for $210 a ton in the south end of the sound. Up north by Everette it may be as high as $280-300, offer $600 and play it safe. If it's complete, you'll make your money back.
I think the engine in that will be the MEL...in case you caught the post about these engines a while back. ford-mel-engine.com I think is the website about 'em.
Deduct towtruck, h***le, actually doin somethin, wife's complainen. Show him $300, a twelve pack of something decent and a trailer with a friend to help and away you go. Dont forget to be respectful. He's not an an idiot.
^unless the guy has his own means of hauling the car there, then all he'd show you in return would be his middle finger and a good project/parts going down the road to becoming Kias. I'd say be fair. Tell him the curb weight is 4200, ask what s**** yard he'd take it to, call THAT yard for its' price, multiply price per ton by 2.1, and offer him exactly what the yard would have paid. He might drop the price a bit just for you being so straight with him.
According to Ehow that car's shipping weight was 3796 lbs. I like Fbama73's concept. But I agree with Rustynewyorker's comment on the next page in that it might be prudent to just round the offer up to the next hundred over what the s**** yard offered. In that if the s**** yard offered him 560 offer 6 nice crisp 100 $$ bills and don't be an *** trying to beat him down over trivial things. That's probably the number one reason a lot of guys don't want to deal with selling old cars to individuals.
Based on its delivered weight, I'd say $400. And that's knowing that some of that weight is gl***, plastic, seat batting and rubber. Unless it's actually a nice PARTS car, I wouldn't throw money at it. Remember, you're renting a trailer, paying for fuel, etc. From my standpoint, it really depends on what its true state is: serious junk or good parts-wagon? If you have dough in the bank and are seriously considering it as project (or trade car), then you may want to hedge your bet by going $500. Do you have a PHOTO? Surely would answer a TON of questions here! As it is, all us HAMBers are trying to answer your question based on a vague hypothesis. If, in fact, you're looking to get a project-worthy car for s**** price, I honestly don't think anybody but you can answer the question (once you've checked s**** price locally). After that, it's a moral decision for you to make, IMO. IF the guy knows his **** and really just wants equivalent to going s**** price, heck, find out and give him that. Then you can have a clear conscience.
Look, if the s**** guy will come get it and give him $280 a ton for it, you'd best give the guy $600 and not **** around and argue over stuff like fuel or what parts of the car have no s**** value. What's a couple hundred bucks on a car like this? If it's nice enough to clean up and sell, you'll make the money back. If it's a piece of **** with a bad frame, you'll still make it back parting it out.
^ and THAT cannot be argued with. It's irreplaceable old iron to us. To the current owner, it's a commodity to be turned into cash. What happens to it after that is of no concern to him.
I'm going to go get it in a few. Also picking up a decent 61? Ford wagon. I was going to flip the Edsel for a few bucks but seriously thinking about making it look like an old stock car with a 4 point roll cage in it. I'll either post pics here later or start a new thread on what I'm buying/bought. Maybe pics in both. Later
Yo, Scott. If you need some fodder for ideas, there at least one HAMB thread on Edsels as stock cars. Just FYI. Good luck! And, yes, please post progress, man!
I love Edsel's. I wasn't around in the 50's and I heard they were fire hazards, but they're just cool looking cars. And I'm sure by now whatever was causing them to ignite can be fixed. Mathius
any car can be redone make sure if your paying for it get the ***le .... any parts sold can overcome the investment .... down to s****ping the unusable bad steel timing and storage the obstacles from this point
Why dont you ask him how much he wants for the car, cash and have cash in hand. Expect to pay around 600 but maybe he will throw out a lower number. Then everyones happy.
It should be worth a few more bucks to you if he has the ***les to the cars. Know s**** value going in and as Bama said be straight up with the guy. Hell, both of you call the s**** yard on speaker phone when you get there.
Here in Texas you can't even s**** a car without a ***le. Our s**** is getting $14 a hundred, which works out to $280 a ton.
