    Happy 4th of July from Ridgefield, Connecticut, the only town in the State to have a Battle during the Revolutionary War. Lets start a HAMB history lesson and travel guide.

    What are you doing on the 4Th?
    We are in a local 4Th of July parade at 10 AM.
    Then down to the USS Midway in San Diego for Fireworks at 6 PM.

    Canonsburg, Pa. second largest parade in the state, second only to Philadelphia. and we only have a population of about 8000.
    please take a moment to read the Declaration of Independence and remember those that wrote it and those that defend it.

    It's the holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence way back on July 4th, 1776. Our ancestors declared their independence from Britain. The "4th" means going to parades, picnics, concerts, barbecues, and of course lots of FIREWORKS-- and we know that a lot of those fireworks won't necessarily be the kind your local town shoots off into the night sky in a safely controlled environment, in actuality, the majority of firework activity will be kids playing with their own personal stash of scaled down explosives (firecrackers, bottle rockets, etc). While we certainly want our kids to celebrate our nation's independence, we sure don't want them to spend their 4th of July in the hospital emergency room. It's unfortunate that so many children do in fact wind up in the emergency room this time of year, severely injured, burned, maimed, and left with lifelong disabilities as a result of "playing" with fireworks. Parents and grown-ups should keep an especially watchful eye on our kids this 4th of July. We don't want to see our kids burned, maimed, permanently disfigured, or even dead from a foolish 4th of July mishap. This Independence Day, let's make an effort to keep our kids independent of emergency room grief. Try to celebrate our nation's glorious independence in a safe manner that would make our Founding Fathers proud...

    Leave the business of blowin' stuff up to the professionals this Independence Day...

    We celebrate this date because was a huge step in the history of freedom. The men that signed the Declaration were bold almost beyond words; they basically spit in the eye of one of the most powerful monarchs on earth at the time.

    "And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor."

    It turns out that quite a few of them were asked to give up their lives and fortunes, but none of them surrendered their sacred honor. I'm inspired every time I read that part.

  10. Back at you Don and everyone else,,I have enjoyed driving both my cars today,ate more BBQ than I should and preparing to set of a lot of fireworks out on my neighbors boat dock,,and then eat more BBQ,,:D

    Seen on TV this morning, and I have to agree:

    Our forefathers risked everything, including their very lives, to vote on a Declaration of Independence. Nowadays, we can't even get our elected officials to vote on anything that matter, in fear of losing their position in government. My, how times have changed.

    The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.

  16. Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men

    who signed the Declaration of Independence?

    Five signers were captured by the British as traitors,
    and tortured before they died.

    Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.
    Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;
    another had two sons captured.

    Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or
    hardships of the Revolutionary War.

    They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes,
    and their sacred honor.

    What kind of men were they?

    Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.
    Eleven were merchants,
    nine were farmers and large plantation owners;
    men of means, well educated,
    but they signedthe Declaration of Independence
    knowing full well that the penalty would be death if
    they were captured.
    Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and
    trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the
    British Navy. He sold his home and properties to
    pay his debts, and died in rags.

    Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British
    that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.
    He served in the Congress without pay, and his family
    was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him,
    and poverty was his reward.

    Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall,
    Clymer,
    Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

    At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that
    the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson
    home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General
    George Washington to open fire. Nelson watched
    from afar as his home was destroyed,
    and Nelson died bankrupt.

    Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.
    The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

    John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying.
    Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill
    were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests
    and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his
    children vanished.

    So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and be thankful for these patriots.

    Right on! And don't forget the United States is suppose to be a Republic, not a Democracy. I don't remember if it was John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, or Ben Franklin who said the following. Democracy is a Wolf and a couple of lambs deciding on whats for dinner while Liberty (meaning a Republic) is a well-Armed Lamb. God Bless and Help America.

    I would like to add that none of these men were politicians! They all were ordinary men like us who loved the thought of freedom so much some gave all they had and more. They did not do it for money, they did not do if for power, they did not do it for personal gain. they did it for us!

    My G,G,G Grandfather John Boarders fought in the revolutionary war, I am very thankful for him and all the other brave men and women who gave us the freedom we have today.
