I picked up what I think is the correct Zenith 6-volt tube radio for my truck. The one that fits the dash-hole and has the side mounting brackets. Does anyone have any pictures or information on how it is correctly mounted? I don't see what the side brackets mount to and my shop manual references two panel mounting nuts but I am not sure what they are. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks, -Joe
Maybe this will help. Pic of 48-50 dash looking up from below and behind. I borrowed this pic from someone
Joe, At some time Ford stopped installing the under dash mounts, I think it was probably the mid 1950 model year, Ford did a lot of changes in the mid 1950 model year. Here is a picture of the correct '48-50 radio along with the '48 Mercury radio that will also fit the truck but with different bezel, knobs and side brackets: Drawing of the radio brackets: Here's a picture of the under dash brackets: The way the radio comes through the dash is rather primitive:
Thanks for the pics, info, and specs. I will try to fab those side brackets with the mounting holes. I will post a couple of pics when it is done.
My truck didn't have the stock under dash mounts but knowing where they should be mounted really helped. I had a freind with some HVAC hangers that worked perfectly for the job. The radio looked a little unfinished coming through the hole in the dash so I also added a 1/8 chrome strip. It kind of matched the chrome around the gauges. Here are some mounting pics. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=27628
I am restoring a 1949 Ford F1 and purchased a radio that fits into the original dash hole BUT, I havent been able to find the attachment that goes around the radio, bolting into the original holes. In the photo above it looks like you were able to find something of fab something up. Id love to know what you were able to put together. It would be very helpful!!! Kris
Kris, did you buy an original truck radio or a Mercury car radio? What piece are you looking for, the bracket on side of the radio itself or the brackets under the dash? I've had a few trucks that didn't have the brackets under the dash, they probably stopped installing them in late '49 or '50 because not many people were willing to pay extra for a radio.
I purchased - https://www.cl***iccarstereos.com/1...2AzS-p71qk0B8u_mgZFuzzWXBZrNgbCRoCK0UQAvD_BwE - I am looking for the outward dash attachment plate that goes around the radio knobs. Are you seen any of these or know where to purchase?
Are you looking for this adapter? They show up on eBay every so often. I found this one on line, not quite sure why there is the lip with the holes in it. http://www.2040-parts.com/nos-1948-1949-1950-ford-truck-radio-adaptor-bracket-i1605268/
Right now on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Mercu...560849?hash=item1f1d4cd591:g:8EgAAOSwCGhf~duH
Hi Bob - I am putting the in the original radio hole in the top part of the dash. I thought I was looking for the bezel that holds the radio to the dash. Like the photo below. Ive looked on Ebay but havent been able to find what im looking for. I may have to have something fabricated from aluminum.
I have the stock radio in my '49 pickup. It's a course looking installation. The factory hole is cut to fit the radio with very little room around the radio. I would think there should be some kind of flange to hide the cut out.
