Uhg, sorry to hear that... I blew my 170 up just reving it up in a parking lot about thirty years ago. Look for a 200, your life will be much happier!

Ow! What a bummer. I know in my neck of the woods Ford's small sixes are hard to find. If the car has a manual I'd pull the motor and transmission as a unit. In my experience getting the input shaft to line up with the motor is really hard when you are moving the engine around instead of the transmission. I think a swap should go pretty quick on that car. I had an engine blow on a 65 Rambler. My friend and I took the motor/trans out in half an hour (it was a six). It was still warm from running after it was out of the car

    Good luck!

You'll need a 200 six. The 250 won't work with your trans, but if you get the trans and all you can make it work. See www.fordsix.com for all kinds of info on the little bugger. Remember, the 240/300 won't fit -- they are big bore sixes and way too long.. Also a totally different engine. The 144/170/200/250 are the same family, but the 250 has a taller deck height (longer stroke... IIRC 1/4" taller block) and uses the small Ford V-8 bell pattern. The early 250s might use the small six pattern (the 240/300 use the V-8 pattern, I think), but those would be hard to find. The FordSix website has all that info.

  5. When I was living in Nor Cal I had a friend from San Diego that was a surfer. he had one of those wagons, good little surf rods.

Once he came north to the surf the maverics before they were a household word. His brakes went to crap while he was up.

We fixe the brakes at my place. He said lets go to baja to surf, well i don't surf but he talked me into going. Made the trip down and back no sweat. Good trip.

He drove that car well into the late '80s and still owns it.

Nice wagon! Sorry about your engine. I agree with need louvers and farna, a 200 is the way to go. I'm in the works of getting my hands on a Comet so a lot of reading is getting done on my part. Seems the best route. Good luck and subscribed!

Cool project. Good luck on finding an engine. In my experience when I absolutely NEED to have a certain part, I cannot find one to save my life. After I don't need one anymore I find six of them the next day. Murphy's law in full effect.

So here's the deal... I have yet to be in a major metropolitan area that doesn't have a Mustang club or services. Get with these guys. The reason is, the first thing they do when purchasing a six cylinder car is rip out the six and throw a 302/5 liter V8 in. I have bought a couple of good running 200 over the years from Mustang guys for virtually nothing. The latest was back in January when we bought the 200/C4 combo for Judy's '62 wagon for 300.00. That's a FRESH rebuild on both...

The 200 I6 was used in many FOMOCO vehicles, including the fox body cars (Mustang, Fairmont, Zephyr, etc) into the early eighties. You should have no trouble finding a CHEAP fox donor car that is far from mile'd out, just keep watching CL, etc.

The 200 was made up to 1984 -- I'd thought they were dropped before then. The 250 was made from 69-80. The deck height of the 200 was raised 1.66" (not 1/4" as I stated earlier... should have looked it up!!), the cam was moved higher in the block to clear the crank (different timing chain), and the bell and flywheel bolt patterns were changed to small block Ford V-8.

Good to know! I've been combing craig's list for days, no luck. I have work and school most of the week. Hopefully I'll get out of work early enough in the next two days to do some junkyard hunting

Hit up John Fowlie [Big M] @ Big M Automotive. He's located just north of Sacramento, CA and I can damn near gaurantee he either has a good motor, or can hook you up with someone closer to you, who does. His number is 530-473-2225.

He's got quite a few early Falcons too. I know for a fact he has 2 wagons, both are red. Cant remember what year, but they are for sure '60-'63. He's also got a few sedans from those years too. Good luck, I love your wagon. 2dr wagons are rad!

Sounds like you and my daughter would really hit it off. I gave her a '62 falcon coupe for her 16th birthday about 8 years ago. She doesn't do any of the wrenching, just the dreaming, and designing. I put a 200 in it, mating it up to the stock auto trans and it was a daily, trouble free driver for quite a while untill I put it in the shop for body work.
I've painted the interior fat flake green, installed '65 T-Bird buckets, and the back seat out of a '58 T-bird. We're doing the upholstery in white and green metal flake vinyl. The latches were kinda' scary so I adapted VW Jwtta bear claw ones and it's a LOT safer. Check out my photo album for pics.
There's a local Falcon club that you should know about for help and tips, I'll send you the info when I get home. I think it's the "Rainier Falcon Club" Also in Bellevue is a Mustang repo store where I get a lot of parts called "Bell-Kirk Mustangs".
Oh yeah, My daughter also has a Panda Bear tat on her back.

That's crazy! I am a huge Creature from the Black Lagoon fan. I want to name the wagon "Rita" and do green flake like the Gill Man! Great minds, huh? I will definitely give the club a google, my little brother-in-law-thing has a Ranchero he should get out!

ALSO! We have a few leads. Right now I have to wait till I get paid Tues or Weds. Then it's deciding if it's worth driving for the better deal or not. Yay poor kid.

Okay, here's the info I promised... Falcon Club of America - Rainier Chapter www.rainierfalcons.com Here's a shot of Jillians interior. The mooneyes green flake steering wheel was a MUST. I modified the center cap from the original one to attach to the aftermarket one. Hard to see on the dash, but that's a swatch of the green metal flake naugahyde we're using for the tuck and roll.

Good luck with the engine swap. I like the idea of picking up a 200 from some Mustang club member. Try contacting Shannon in the parts dept. at Ford of Kirkland. (425)821-6611. She's in the club, and they're having a car show at their dealership in Kirkland this Sunday afternoon. When your ready to update your brakes, I hear changing over to a dual reservoir M/C and booster unit from either a Mercury Topaz, or a Chevy/Geo Metro is the way to go

Well, waiting on the motor issue. In the mean time, Jack got me an awesome shifter knob. Just have to decide how I want to paint it now...

So here's the waiting part. I'm not getting hours at work, so I'm waiting on school money. The car is at Marty's so I can't tinker with it.

I really do have to Thank Marty for saving my bacon all the time. He's been super sweet

Oh yeah. When searching craigslist "straight 6" is just as valuable as "inline 6". DUH. Hopefully I'll have the engine by this weekend since I now have the funds

That looks like one of Jimmy Flintstone's resin knobs. If so a good soaking over night in Wesleys Bleche White white wall tire cleaner will remove the mold release. Then you can clean it up with sand paper and prime and paint just like plastic. You can even hand paint the details and then clear it. I have done a few of his using model car paint or even duplicolor or other touch up paint.
    Cool!!!!

Panda, if you decide you want to switch over to a 5 lug set up. I have a complete 5 lug front susp out of a 63 I would let go cheap and a rearend out of a maverick.. i had bought it for my 62 falcon wagon but sold it and the new owner did not want it..

I know right now the motor is your priority.. (I also know someone with a 302 and C4 trans that would sell it really really cheap.. motor did run but needed some head work and trans was good. send me a PM if you have any interest.

Hey! Thanks everyone. I have been MIA, working at the shop and the clinic puts me at 12 hour days 6 days a week.

I just road tripped up to Sequim and got 2 engines for $100! They are in great condition and the trip was a blast. I'm hoping to have the engine in and the rear brake shoes taken care of within two weeks. I posted a bunch of photos in the album on my profile.

Also, it was really great to meet some of the folks on this thread at The Blessing. Hope to see you at Camwinders with my car!

I might very well be interested down the road, the time and money fairy hasn't blessed me enough to take care of it right now though. Thanks for the offer!
