Hry, I'm building a '37 frod pick up and will be running the 283 that came with it. i want to upgrade to a 5 speed and have a line on a T5 trans from a Chevy s10. This trans has the 1" - 14 spline input shaft, which leads me to believe it is a 4 cyl. or 6 cyl trans. Will this work OK behind a V8 or do I need to get a different trans? and here's a shot o' the truck... Thanks.
You can run it behind the v8, just don't get onto it too much. That trans doesnot like too much torque. You just need to match the clutch disc to the input shaft of the trans. If you can find a t5 out of a camaro you will get more friendly ratios and a little better torque rating. jerry
Hey Jerry, Thanks. Looks like I'm looking for a new one then, 'cause i definitely want to get on it...what fun is having 300HP if you can't punch it every now and then for fear of braking yer trans?
I'm runing a NWC camaro t5 in my truck right now. Haven't blown it up yet and I don't take it too easy on it. Running a mild 350, prolly 300 or so horse power. OD is nice with it. jerry
Not sure if you have checked with ebay or not but they have a lot of T5s. Mostly mustangs, but i think they had good prices on the chev t5s as well, just not as many.
To my knowledge, all S10s were 4/6 cyl. There's really no way to be sure what it's out of or which ratios you have w/o the tag number. There should be an aluminum tag bolted to one of the tailshaft bolts - the number you're looking for is 1352-xxx - the XXX will tell you what tranny it is. Lots of sites with "decoder rings". All S10 trannys prior to '92 were NWC. ALL 83-84 are 4.03 first gear & ALL 89-93 are 3.76 first gear - the 'tweeners could be either. ALL pre-89 are cable speedo, ALL 92-93 are electric, & the 'tweeners could be either. If you have a choice, get the 3.76 1st tranny - better ratios & slightly stronger. In general, a higher 1st gear ratio equals a higher torque rating. As for strength of the NWC trannys - they vary. The WC upgrade was primarily in the synchros & blocking rings - only a few of the high-end trannys actually got stronger gears/alloys (Cobra & SVO). I abused an '83 Mustang T5 (165 lb/ft rated) behind a stroked 351W for years - killed the synchros, but double-clutching is fun! The tranny lived like that for literally years as a daily driver & I was NOT gentle. The stock torque ratings are somewhat conservative - the 5.0 Mustang guys beat the crap out of them until the Tremecs came around... Best recommendation is to get a high quality shifter that has positive stops on it. The reason 3rd & 5th (to a lesser degree) break is the forks go over-center. Probably the single most important upgrade to a T5. You can put the S10 tailshaft & topcover onto any T5, but you may have speedo issues. Do a search of the archives, there's loads of threads on here about T5s...here's one: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20583
snks Thanks Ernie. There is no tag on this trans. There are some numbers cast into the case that start with the smae sequence (1352...). Would these tell me anything?
Check the top cover, there is often a sticker with a bar code on it. This will also have the 1352 number. I don't think the case number will be of any use because the cases were all the same. I think, but am not sure, the 1352 is a root part number because it's the -xxx that distinguishes the features. Since the cases are all mainly the same, I doubt the case casting number will have any identifing information.
