I am doing a 1958 apache build. I have been deciding how I want to go about doing the frame work. I am going to do an IFS but I also wanted to give the rear some better handling qualities. Has anyone tried rear coil spring? I have seen some info on using the leafs to drop the truck a little and maybe help out the ride. Thanks in advance!
The newer trucks (60s-early 70s) had coil springs in back. The frame is different though, it is wider over the rear end. They do ride nicer than with leafs. You might be able to whack the back end of the frame off and replace it with one from a 63-72 truck. Or go with a 4 link setup, with coilovers.
Depending on how low you want it,68-69 Chevelle coils work great. El Camino coils are stiffer. Coils ride really nice. Up to you...
People have been using coilover shocks for years to do away with the leaf springs. Very easy to mount and you can get any spring rate to give the ride you want. Speedway has a chart with recommended rates for vehicle weight. Coilovers can be mounted with up to a 45* angle for clearence if needed. You need a panard bar for lateral control and something to prevent axle wind up, both easy installs.
Oh yeah, you can mount them so you can walk under the truck without jacking it up or low enough you can't roll a marble under it.
