'40 Olds 2 door sedan - pole-barn find!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Animal, Jul 2, 2011.

  1. I started another thread about this, but it didn't get much traction. I thought the title with the actual car in it might help, so here goes. I bought this back in December, just got it out of its old home and in the sunlight. It has '54 Colorado plates, and is in great shape. No rust in the floors or trunk, all the interior handles, window cranks, etc. are there. I only found one small piece of stainless trim missing, and the original engine and transmission are also there and complete.
Plans so far call for modern running gear and a general refurbishing of the interior and exterior. No body mods, just a hot rod vibe, probably mid-60's-ish. :) Anyone have any old pics of similar cars done back in the day?

I always thought the 40 had the best looking front end of the pre-war Oldsmobiles. Cool project. Hopefully you keep it all Oldsmobile.

You mentioned in the other thread

It will get an engine/drivetrain transplant if I build it. The hood ornament is original, I'm pretty sure.I'm on the fence between this and another project.

  6. A very cool starting point for a very cool ride!

They are BIG cars. A mild chop would make it look really cool!

  10. I'm afraid a chop would make it look even longer.....The body's so nice, I don't plan any body mods, other than maybe some frenched lights or the such. As for Mustang II suspension, I found a new kit that a guy decided not touse, with a universal cross-member that I may be able to score cheap. I'm just not sure that's the direction I'll go. PM sent for the article, anyhow. Knowledge is always a good thing to have. :)

Definitely no chop on a car like this. I think you will like the way they did the MII conversion. I was pretty impressed, there is a LOT to remove and it's a big modification but it turned out very clean, probably one of the nicest jobs I have seen done in a magazine article.

Will send it to you tomorrow. :)

Sent it to you, scanned all 8 pages of it. Let me know if its no good online and I could mail you a paper copy. It's pretty unique for you in that they do the job using a Heidts universal crossmember kit on a 40 Olds sedan almost identical to yours. :)

    That's cool!

You need an Olds V8 to go in it for the ultimate in cool factor!!

  16. Thanks....it looks pretty straight-forward, from the quick look I gave it this morning. I'll study it closer when I get some time. Thanks for the effort! :)

What type of front suspension is on the olds, I got a 40 "chevy" sedan with IFS "knee action" schocks , figure on some disks brakes and then putting back on the road.
