Anyone here have experience with patriot cylinder heads? I am building a small journal 327 with 10.5 to 1 cr and a doug nash 4+1 to back it.I sure could use some input on head selection
i used them on a 355 chevy i put together a few years ago. no complaints. excellent product for the price.
A guy I work with bought a set, returned them as the quality was not the best. He bought a set of darts.
They are ok, I have a pair on my big block. The components are not great quality, I would not use them race engine, but for just regular tooling around they are just fine. A decent product for the money in my opinion. Good luck
You may want to pm "Littleman". I believe that he ran them on his truck a while back. He found all of the weak links.
At the shop I used to work at we used there heads alot till we got 3 pairs with the wrong size valve seals, I would look at some other brands myself(Edelbrock/Trick Flow/Dart)
The set of Patriots I attempted to run...in the end..........would do a better job as book ends....The valve seats would shift...the castings ..well I have nothing nice to say about them.....I will suggest you save up a little more doe and lay it down on a set of Darts, AFR's and others that have been suggested above.....Spend your money once !.........The Patriots will survive on a StreetRod, but a real HotRod you may be flirting w/ trouble.....Now keep in mind I was Drag Racing w/ them and they did not hold up to the 7,000 + RPM's I was throwing @ them.....maybe I had a bum set ?....I ended up buying a brand new set of AFR's..Great castings, great parts used in the assembly and cnc ported...and all my troubles went away after I first fired it w/ them on.............Goodluck, Littleman
I've used one set on a 383 we built. OK for the money. I agree with the other guys that they're OK for something mild but for big power try something else. The 383 made 430hp with them. One issue we had when it went in the car was that the accessory holes were drilled a little off. Other than the benefits of being aluminum, you'll do just as well with a set of vortecs for a little less money. The vortecs will pull off the 10.5 compression without detonation if you tune it right. The patriots will be more forgiving with the 10.5. Shouldn't have any trouble at all.
I just had the weekend from hell because nowhere is it mentioned that you need a oversized intake gaskets to run a victor jr or preformer intake on these pcs of shit.
I'm running a pair on a mild 355 sbc for about 3 years now and have been pleased with the performance and everything so far, but it is not a race car and I bought them mainly for looks and a slight performance improvement. I sanded the smooth ends of them down and polished that part. I bought mine from a performance shop in Kingsport, TN that used to sell them on ebay. I think they checked them out fairly good before selling them.
I'm running a set of Trick-Flow "Twisted Wedge" heads on my 352 Windsor roller motor... That car is too brutal to be running it on the street..
A friendly suggestion, tell us your budget, and we can make a good recommendation other than Patriot based on that. No sense throwing out the names of all the great heads out there if you are not willing or unable to spend the money. Many good names have been mentioned, but if you only want/or are able to spend $800, no sense in naming the $1200 offerings.
I worked on one of thier engines - yup they make engines too - i had to put adjustable pushrod guide plates on them because the rockers didn't line up with the valves. I took pics and they refunded the customers' money. It had roller rockers and 3 of them were half off the valve, the rocker stud was not drilled where it was supposed to be and that threw the rocker out of alignment.
FWIW, you wont know the static compression ratio until you have the heads and the combustion chamber size at hand.
