Good day in WV for a walk in the woods.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by The Hot Rod Grille, Apr 23, 2011.

  1. Rainy day here in West Virginia, so a buddy and I decided to take a short "road trip" and enjoy a walk in the woods before the snakes and bees come out. Here's a bit of what we found.

Wish we had stuff like that here in the WA woods but I have a feeling the local tweakers would have picked them clean for s**** metal.
Thanks for sharing. That's the next best thing to being physically there.

Our woods have been picked clean of any iron or steel.
Awful lot of computer monitors and construction trash, though.

The first older bus is Dodge, about late 29 or 1930. Must be quite rare in a bus version.

There is a family here in Maine that had four very large yards full of old cars and trucks. There was probably something on the order of 500-600 cars total. Some 1930's , 1960,s and 1970's , but most were 1940's and 1950's. The majority was stuff purchased from the goverment and was Army, Navy, and Air Force vehicles. The father who bought it all back then died and the kids ( in their 70's ) were fighting over the land and the vehicles. The old man never sold any parts off of the cars and so they were complete. I remeber a row of 1942ish Ford staff cars lined up just as they were driven there . Still with the black-out lights , all the trim painted olive drab and with military lisence plates still on them. The engines were complete , nothing missing. There were at least 20 Chevy Suburbans from the 40's and 50's , some were ambulances , some utility vehicles, there were even some Ford woodies ( with no wood ).
There was a mad rush to try and save some of it , but sadly most went to the crusher.

I see a lot of these woods finds from W. Virginia people. Looks like you have a lot of stuff still there.

I was in CT about 20 years ago visiting family. I met a friend of my family there that was into old cars, mainly Cadillacs. He took me to a place, I think it was near Granville in MA, that was owned by an old Armenian guy. This guy had 100's cars from the 20's through 60's ****tered all through his woods. I don't remember exactly where this was since we made the trip at night. I do recall that it was not too far north of the CT / MA border and for some reason Granville rings a bell.
Some of the cars had been there for years since trees were growing through some of the cars. There were quite a few interesting makes there. I wish I could have made the trip in daylight.
I wonder if this description sounds familiar to any fellow HAMBers in that area. It could be all those cars have been hauled out by now or it could still be there. Who knows?

Awesome stuff, I'll never complain about rust again after seeing the '57.

  24. The oldest bus is a late 20's Dodge. There were several (15-20) busses on the property in the late 30's thru the 60's (including a really cool '57 Chevy short bus). I didn't get any more bus pics, but will be going back in the fall and will make sure to have a fully charged camera battery. Lots of neat stuff that I wasn't able to get pics of today!

  25. Yes, it's a Hudson (I love the lines, looks chopped from the factory). I would guess it was in very good shape when parked years ago. Here is a shot of the interior.

  26. The stuff is located in G***away, WV. Not a bad road trip for you from Mercer County. Good luck!

    is that a 57 Turnpike Cruiser?....kinda rare....thanks for sharing....east coast guys....get with it!!!

  30. I know where it is. That would be my good buddy *****ers place. In fact one of my friends is headed up tomorrow to pick up two 59 Impala dashes and an eleven tooth 53 Desoto grill. I have been grabbing parts from there ever now and then for the past seven years. There are a lot more cars than what is pictured here too. Great place to go check out and one of the best old guys you will ever meet.
