hello there. well after being on here a year i guess i'll stop reading and start posting. i have been after a 54 chevy bel air for a little while and finally found it deep in the hollar of west virginia. drove 5 1/2 hours each way to get her out of a one lane road and out of a preachers barn. i've had her for 2 months or so and am trying to make it a better car than when i got it. it's solid and a driver but as with all classics, it needs some attention. i have posted a pic below so you can get an idea of how she's looking. car has been converted to 12 volt, has split manifold and just got the exhaust done and it sounds awesome! dual pipes out the back with 22 inch glass packs installed backwards. very happy with the sound! but as of right now i'm in need of a few things to get this car rolling better and being dependable. if anyone has these parts or knows of anywhere i should look, let me know. thanks for any info and special thanks to hotdamn for all his 54 knowledge! 1954 bel air power glide FLEX PLATE (car is just screaming when i turn the key and yes i've rebuilt the starter) 1954 bel air WORKING GAS GAUGE (mine reads E and yes we've replaced the sending unit and tested the gauge and it won't jump when powered) 1954 bel air HOOD SPRINGS (mine barely hold the hood up)
You mentioned your 12 volt conversion, what is the voltage that is actually going to your gauge? More often than not, those gauges receive 12 volts and are instantly burnt up.
we added a step down to it so it can be back to 6 volt but i'm guessing it's been blown already. would you happen to have a working 54 gas gauge? figured i'd ask since your name is morris gauge
We restore customer gauges and do not often sell the gauge itself. It would be best to keep the cosmetics matched anyway. I would be happy to look at your gauge and evaluate the repair. Visit morrisgauge.com.
Welcome from Greenville , SC ! Watch changing those hood springs they will tear your face hands up if your not careful!
thanks for all the welcomes! and yeah i'm in greensboro. hoping to get the 54 back on the road in the next week or so. till then, i'm rolling the impala
