Can someone tell me exactlly where the mc is?I think I see it but then how do I add fluid? Thanks,Herb.
I know this sounds silly but I don't see any access hole on the floor and can hardly get my fat gut under the car to see if it is tucked up in somewhere.Better lay off the doughnuts!!
im not familiar with the Olds specifically, but by my 49 Pontiac is very different from the Chevy which has it under the floor..but my Pontiac has it a bit forward of the firewall, its a bit of a pain to get too, but you access it from the top in the engine compaortment
If you're talking the standard M/C (Non Power brakes) they are a MF'r to get to. They have the standard top fill, but you will have to get to them from the underside of the car. They are forward of the firewall. There is no trap door to get to them from the inside. That's what makes them a M F''r. You can't reach them from the top side, leaning over the fender. For mine, I have to use my floor jack to raise the car somewhat so I can slide underneath the car. It's going to have a screw on cap. Trust me, have your trusty dusty channel lock pliers handy. I use a squirt can filled with brake fluid, and a rubber hose attached to the nozzle. I then put the hose in, and pump. You can either pump until it leaks over the top, and wipe up the mess, or stick your finger in the M/C hole from time to time to see how full it is. When you're thru filling the M/C, you only need to put the screw cap back on finger tight. Be aware, there is a thin washer under the cap. Bleeding them, is the ole standard, start with the right rear, the one furthest away from the M/C. If you're doing it as a one man job, you'll have to guess how much you have either ****ed out, or forced in, depending on which way you bleed them. After each wheel cylinder, then I have to go back and fill the M/C, to make sure I don't run it dry. If you have the power brakes, there is a dip sick you can see from looking down from the fender. Again, it's a M/F'r to get to. Then you will need a real long hose on your squirt can to reach down to the dip stick to fill it. A little off the subject of the brakes, but with those lever front shocks, be sure to keep them filled too. If you don't have the shop manual of how to do them, PM me and I'll scan you a copy from my shop manual. HellRaiser
Guess all them '50s Coldsmobiles have that screwed up brake stuff. My 59 has that treadlevac unit under the steering column setup, guess the '50 is like that too. BUMMER!
I've got one of those treadle vac systems, that I need to put in my 53 Olds. But it's a two man and a boy job to do..... Those damn things are heavy to lift up into place. And there's damn little room to work up there. It's almost a pull the engine to get to it easier. My 52 has the standard brakes. Anyone looking for some mechanic work to do????? I'll pay a six pak per hour..... HellRaiser
Thanks Hellraiser; I finally got it! I looked everywhere on how to access that thing and could not believe it was in such a awkward place. I may contact you on those lever shocks in the future. Thanks again.Herb.
