The previous owner removed the leaky power assisted steering of the 62' impala and replaced it with a leaky 605 steering box. I have been told that i could get a 500 steering box, with better responce and better designed, but i dont know what types of cars have a 500 box, or where to start looking.

    any tips

Check eBay for the 500 box... I was looking recently for different boxes and they were giving me several different applications on their sales adds. Hate to point towards Ebay, but if it works as a resource, use it.

If you decide not to swap:

The 605 leaks would be at the input and the output shafts...both are easy seals to replace. Gates did have 2 mini seal kits, one for the upper and another for the lower. Rockauto did carry them when I looked several years ago.

Parts stores in my area, only carried the Gates major overhaul kit for $$.

is it possible to get them from a local parts shop? (napa) or a rebuilt? its hard to justify the $100 for rebuilt 600 vs $350-$400 for a new 500 box
