pinstripers and sign painters tell me what you think

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fuzzybear, Jul 9, 2011.

  1. i've been practicing scrolling and lettering. these are the first scrolling panels i've done that i think look halfway respectable. let me know what you think and if you've got any advice to give, i'm all ears. for now i'm just practicing on a sheet of perspex, a little more practice and i'll move up to painting some proper panels that i can hang.

BTW please excuse the blurry pics (taken on my phone).

  2. ok don't know why the pics didn't attatch, here they are

I think they look fantastic, but I'm no expert either. Keep up the great work!

They look great to me and I think you've got a lot of talent. Just a shame you're too far away or I'd let you practice on my rides ;)

Great work! Time to start on some panels, IMO.

  8. You have a truly unique style, I like it! So many stripers tend to have the same look. My non-expert eye says your stuff looks "feathery" Very cool, I would say you have a future in striping.

  9. thanks guys. i havent got the balls to try and stripe a car yet but once i get a little more practice i'll be going nuts on my POS daily driver

  10. thanks, my wife said the green one looked like a pea****. i guess you could call that "feathery"

I did some today too. Well you're not gonna see mine displayed.

I think it looks nice and it is unique in a good way.

As Larry Watson said to me when I started all lines must meet no line should be left hanging. Keep up the hood work and keep practicing

I'd say that with some patience , perseverance, and practice along with a little humility you could become an accomplished striper / lettering guy . good luck

  18. thanks philly. i've seen your stuff on pinheadlounge.com, if i can manage to be 1/8th as good as you are i would be more then happy

I'd say you're well on the way Fuzzybear, scrollwork is way harder to pull off than traditional striping in my opinion and you've started off with a fine version. Keep practicing,it only gets better with time, hope you're posting to the Pinhead as well, nice to have a photo timeline as you get better.
    Curse.

Seems this thread will be the active one so Ill repost my question here....

What would be a good starter kit? Or what do you all recommend to get for someone who wants to learn the art?

i havent done much striping but for starters i just got a 00 mack brush, a couple cans of one shot and some mineral spirits and started figuring it out on a random piece of gl***. i think it was a shelf out of a random display case.

Yes, that's a good rule of thumb with dagger style work, not so much for scroll work though....I think it looks good, I've tried and tried, but can't seem to do consistant scroll style striping......

  30. i used a couple of mack "wizard vortex" brushes to do the scrolling and a mack "grey squirrel quill" to do the lettering. i use mack "10 series sword stripers" to do traditional striping and also a mack "excalibur". 1 shot paint is the best paint i've used (there are other sign painters enamels but i find them hard to locate over here and the price of importing paints is rediculous). read Alan Johnsons "how to pinstripe" book, there's alot of good tips in there. and i practice on a sheet of perspex (be sure to clean first with a 50/50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water to get rid of the static or your paint will go crazy). i got most of my brushes from www.tcpglobal.com, they were very good to deal with (they also sell paint but as i said, the price of importing it is rediculous). good luck
