OK, I've found a TON of these transmissions in the junkyards for cheap. I rebuilt one awhile back for My 2000 F150 (Had 220,000 miles on it and it was road HARD). It had an electronic speedometer on it. Does anyone have any experience converting from an electric to mechanical so I can use my original Instrument cluster? Can it be done? I really dont want to have to go to a digital, I like the old look of it. Any help would be great!
I just got an OT 89 F150 for parts and in the AOD it had a dual output for the speedo. It has both a mechanical out and an electrical out in the same piece. If the ****** uses a gear to drive the electrical output, one of ones like on the AOD might work, or just a regular mechanical output off another ******.
I have used the same speedo pickup in the last 3 trans I have had in my '51 F-1 (I just keep moving it from trans to trans as I replace them). A early '80s New Process 435, a mid '60s BW 3 spd + OD, and currently a M5R2. So you should be able to just find and older mechanical cable receiver and stick it into the M5R2. The dual senders that fauj is talking about above are for early cruise control systems. Mechanical for the speedometer, and electrical for the cruise control system. Good Luck
I installed an LS-2 with a 6 speed a/t in an 81 Firebird. There is a company that makes a driver that converts an electric trans to a mechanical speedo. It's a small electric motor that runs off the trans signal and turns a cable plugged into the mechanical speedo. Found it on the internet, but don't remember the co name.
