Projects How do you tow with an old boom wrecker?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Squablow, Aug 24, 2010.

  1. i have got a f 700 ford boom truck and have a short boom and a wrecker apron and have hauled school busses with it
it would pick up a ford station wagon and haul it tied through the roof
it is a very long wheelbase truck witha Mack rear 1/2 with a Timken double reduction rear end, we made most of it
would send a picture of apron but it is buried in show and for sail!!

Reminds me of the good old days runnin' an 816 5 Ton Army Wrecker!:)

You need a TM 9-2320-260-20, look up the wrecker procedures. & FM 20-22 will help too.

Nice score man! My old man ran tow trucks for over 50 years and developed many new innovations for pickin up cars.. Old style tow trucks had what was known as a "quick lift" a bridle suspended by a pulley sheave that returned to the top of the jib to give mechanical advantage. Two long chains attached to the top of the jib with a "J" hook that went OVER the car's axle and secured to the quicklift bridle (with an old tyre wedged between bridle and car bumper) to secure and raise the car. an "A" frame or telescopic tube was then used to "keep" the bridle away from the back of the tow truck.... Reversing a car up a narrow driveway takes patience and skill... just ask "Mater"....
