I have a nice '49-52 Chevy Deluxe steering wheel that I want to put on my '80s Chevy column. Has anyone done this before? Is there an adapter kit out there somewhere? Is the spline the same? Here's the wheel......
No because the stock column fit up in the wheel and the late model column is to big to fit up in there!
I'd get rid of the 80's column. They're too big where the wheel meets the column as JD up there said. Even if you did rig an adapter of sorts, the two eras/styles clash horribly.
I put a 59 Impala wheel on a later tilt column. IIRC, I had to shorten up the backside of the wheel, as well as make it thicker to match the diameter of the column. Looked better, but I don't know if you can do the same with your wheel. The splines were the same.
So what ever became of this conversion? I'm trying to use the original AD GMC steering wheel but want it on a tilt column. What column do you guys suggest that will make this possible?
Chevy van from the 60's or early 70's. They have gotten scarce and hard to find though. Might also try B-O-P-Cad pre '69 but they are pretty rare too.
I'm using a 54 Bel Air wheel on an S-10 tilt column in my 55 1st AD truck. The splines are the same. I did have to pull the turn signal cam off the back of the wheel though. The hub on the steering wheel matches the base of the column perfectly.
Here's a few pics I'm still working on the steering wheel. The 54 hoop was too big, so I cut the hoop off and welded one from a chevelle steering wheel. Still gotta add the PC-7 epoxy. But I'm sure you guys get the idea.
