I just bought a Holman and Moody 427 side oiler, the date code on the block says January 1971. The man that raced it was Linston Kendall. I was told that he drove a 1951 Anglia named "Blue Angle". I think he was out of Aquadale or Norwood, NC. He has since passed in the past 5-6 years. I would like to find further information on the car Mr. Kendall raced and mabey even a picture from the period.
KTaylor, I know (knew) the car you're looking for. Not sure where it is now but Linson's widow may know. I hung around Linson's shop some when I was about 16. He was nice enough to let me watch and learn. The Anglia was a well built and nicely finished car with a ladder bar/coil over set up. The car ran unlettered for a good while and he ran white steel rims and two very small forward facing scoops on the hood. I thought it looked better before he lettered it with the Blue Angel stuff. The motor you have ran hilborns and ran a couple of different hm cams. The car was fast and he was pretty hard to beat, especially on the 1/8th mile tracks. I saw him run the old Concord, Piedmont, Farmington, Rockingham and Bristol and he was alway competitive. I think the car may still be around as I saw it several years back, still blue, running centerlines. I have looked everywhere for information about him or the car online but so far have found nothing.
My brother-in-law Rudy Sherrill and I used to race wit Linson back in the day. He passed a few years back. His grandson still has the car with a smallblock ford in it. Linson was a very smart man. He told us one time after he quit racing that the engine in his car back then was supposed to be 427 ci but was actually a 440ci bbf.
I know this post is really old but linson Kendall was my great uncle and I can tell you anything you need to know. My dad drove for him a lot.
the blue angle ran a 5.43@146 in the 1/8th in 1970 when he was match racing a alcohol funny car. (That was with the 427 tunnel port(.100 over, 440ci) . Stock toploader. He out run it and that was more or less the end of A-gas. Everyone else was just running 6.0s and 5.90s. He had just been playing with them the whole time.
My Daddy was friends with and raced against Linston back in the Oakboro drag strip days, Liston had a 39 ford coupe and then a 40 ford pu with a sbc in it, my dad had a 39 ford pu with a hot flathead then a 37 Chev with a olds in it. I was just a little kid but that was sure neat. I still have a few Tripp’s My Dad won at Oakboro. Anyone have any photos from there?Did your uncle drive the Henry J he had ? I remember it at Wadesboro and then the Anglia.I remember someone else driving. Needs to be more about your uncle and Liston on here. Liston was an incredible engineer . I spoke with him be he passed and he shared some great stories about he and my Dad racing.
Not trying to hi-jack this thread. Just put a Anglia together for an older buddy of mine. It's a red '51 2dr. Sounds like it came out of the same area you guys are talking about. The story that came with the car is as follows. Been a race car most of its life. Maybe even raced on a dirt oval at one time. Was last drag raced with a F.E. style Ford motor, power glide trans and what looks to be an un-cut '58 Ford 9". Glass nose, rear fenders and trunk lid. Anyone know this car?? Thanks, Gene.
I used to watch Linston race at Suffletown Dragstrip on Hwy 16 outside of Charlotte NC between 1968 and 1970 when I was in high school. He was pretty much King in his class there.
