Im wondering if its a good idea to use my stock 51 ford manual coloum when fitting an auto trans. It may be a C4 or it may be a ford-o-mushbox. Any thoughts? or even better pictures of how you did it? How could it be made so as to prevent me from bumping it into gear accidentaly? Thanks
Put an auto (51 Ford-o-matic) column in it. Hard to find but worth it for the park and other detents.
it's been done many times before , by me and others.there should be some threads on this subject , i know i have posted on some
I have my 41 ford with a C-4 hooked up to the original column. No indents but has worked fine for 15 yrs. got a PRNDL from a ford P/U, put it on my dash with magnetic tape, and and installed a pointer on the column shift shaft.
This is one I did with a 53 column, same deal and turn signal lever built in. <!-- / message --><!-- attachments --><FIELDSET cl***=fieldset><LEGEND>Attached Thumbnails</LEGEND> </FIELDSET> I like this idea. A '53 column shouldn't be too difficult to find. Eventually I'll be putting a 352/C-4 combo in my '50 Mordor. I'll keep this in mind.
I'm doing the same thing. I have a 55 Customline 2 Dr and I'm using my stock 3 spd standard column shifter. A guy here on the forum directed me to a Lokar conversion cable. Works for C4 or fordomatic. Here's the link to Summit for the part. Pretty cheap too. http://m.summitracing.com/parts/LOK-ACA-1801/media
I've been looking for a while of the 51 auto column.I dont even bother to look it from here, because i know that we dont have them around in here.Looks like you dont have either,i have an add in the cl***ifieds and i havent got many offers. Its really nice column,i saw this one at Bottrop's kustom show in Germany,we few weeks ago:
A friend sugested i use the original coloum with the up and down swing to determine the shift, then modify the foward back motion by making it spring loaded and building an indented keeper at the bottom of the coloum or one at the top. any thoughts on this route?
I made the detent plate at the end of the column so reverse is locked out from accidentally engaging, mounted a neutral safety switch from a gm column, its all work but it keeps the original look, didn't have an indicator though. good luck
Huh? What columns have a shift detent in them? The detent is in the trans, even on my late model GM stuff, if you disconnect the shift linkage at the trans, the column lever just flaps back and forth. Just get a cable adapter and hook it up and go.
I put a turbo 400 in my 49 shoebox and used the stock column and shift lever. I just used one of the lower arms and one rod to the trans. I did this years ago and drive it all over the country with no problems. Looks stock and works great. As rustynewyorker said, hook it up and go!
This will do the trick for you http://www.lokar.com/product-pgs/co...shift-linkage-pgs/gm-fordc4-colshiftlink.html they also make a kit to use an AOD,add this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/POLI...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories and it's a done deal.
Check out Limeworks Speedshop.com. They have a shifter conversion kit that is exactly what you need. Top Noch stuff at affordable prices...
Ive got a stock manual trans column hooked to the TH-350 in my '49 coupe. It took a bit of messing around with the location of the shift arms and the spring, but it works great. I ended up making a detent plate out of the guard from a 4" Makita angle grinder and you get around the detents by pushing the shift lever towards the dash (with most factory set-ups you pull it towards you). I was even able to use one of the stock shifter to trans rods. The only drawback is that my shift detents are really close together so downshifting from drive to second usually ends uo in first! Ill just need to lengthen the arm on the trans a bit so I can have a longer throw at the shifter.
