I heard a story annette was still under contract with disney when she did those movies and walt disney asked her to cover her naval in all her swim suit scenes to keep her innocent and pure image
FWIW 'Marty' was one of my best instructors in college. Marty was played by Dave Stollery who chose not to pursue acting as an adult. Instead he went to Art Center College of Design and after graduation, joined GM Design in Michigan as a designer. After a successful career that saw him rising in the ranks he was asked by Toyota to design the 2nd generation Toyota Celica. If his design was successful, Toyota would open a full-blown studio, which they did and soon after, a wave of west coast car design studios followed. Within the design profession, it is generally thought that Stollery's work was the catalyst for nearly every studio out there. He was a great teacher and I enjoyed his hilarious, wise and insightful stories. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Stollery http://www.indesre.com/profile/about_idr.asp
Recall the '27 roadster on Spin & Marty. (same one in Shaggy Dog, Tim Considine driving...) Was that the same '27 Roadster Barris ended up with, painted emerald green and lots of gee-gaw all over? The black Spin & Marty version spurned me on with my first, second, and third '27 Highboys!
"Texas John Slaughter made 'em do what they oughta, cuz if they didn't, they'd die." I remember him and his big ol' hat with the brim turned up in the front "like El Gato the cat, Nine Lives had Elfego Baca." That's all the lyrics I can remember Tom Tryon as Texas John and Robert Loggia as Elfego. My wife used to be a beauty operator in Encino, CA and Annette was a regular customer of hers. She said that she was just as sweet and pretty as she was on TV
Back around '81, I met my girlfriend in a coffee shop in Encino. I was explaining why I was late when Annette caught my eye. She was with her kids. She was dressed in a cocktail dress with a plunging neckline. I blurted out, "Oh my God! It's Annette Funicello!". She just smiled.......
Fireball 500 had plenty of cars, besides, you must of liked those movies if you went to see everyone of them when they were release
FYI: Bikini Beach is on MGM-HD right now 8-10 EST....if you care to see some boss 60's drag action in HD, tune in...
I was just talking about "Back To The Beach" with someone the other day..I too thought it was pretty good, better than the original beach movies..Had to have seen the originals as BTTB was tied into them.
Well, in the movies, Annette was nice and Candy could definately shake it but for me Meredith McRae was the tops. Hey, I always seem to go for the psychos and with a name like Animal.............. Larry T
Annette looked particularly good in the crew's lounge of the USS Mitchell, 1000 miles at sea and a long time since we saw girls of any kind...we watched the beach movies over and over. the drag strip sequence is on Don Ewald's site, at http://www.wediditforlove.com/members/diggers-Bikini-Beach.shtml
I read this thread and it reminded me of watching these movies in the 70's as a kid during the summer. I just ordered the DVD 8 pack for $31 (Amazon). I have a mini projector. I'll hook it up to my kid's travel dvd player and watch them by the pool at night. Some tiki torches, some beers ... I love summer !
After nearly 60 years, I still love Annette, but with age my tastes have become more refined. Tura Satana totally knocked me out in "Faster Pussycat!" I'd share a shower with her anytime.
It was filmed at Westward Beach right next to Zuma. I was working/patrolling Malibu at the time. Connie Stevens looked pretty good too.
Did she bleach or wax her mustache? Come on, you know she had one... I thought she was great as a musketeer but was kind of disappointed in the "mom's style" bathing suits she wore in the surf movies.
