I've been trying to identify a Mustang FC body that I'm using on my nostalgia funny car. Recently while watching a cheesy old drag racing movie ("Burnout"), I noticed a familiar looking front end. After going through the video frame by frame I realized it was my car. I cant make out the name on the quarter panel but the candy orange and gold/yellow paint is quite unique. This part of the movie was filmed at Orange County International Raceway along side Gary Densham's "Teacher's Pet" Monza and the "Blue Max" Mustang in the mid/late 70's. This may be a second use of this body since the fender flares are raised with "scoops" added to the top of the fenders and the chin spoiler is removed from original. The grille and headlight panel is molded not flat and is hand painted and airbrushed. It looks very similar to the Plueger & Gyger mustang with the silver mesh and vertical signal lights. The roof has a slant chop to it also. A Ken Cox sticker remains on the louvered rear window. While sanding the body, I found some candy orange and gold with silver window trim. Under that is black but probably gel-coat. After searching 100's of pictures online and in magazines, I still cant positively identify this car. I'm very interested in learning some history on this car. I've mounted it on an old chassis and I'm running a KB Hemi in it. I can't afford to be competitive with it but it should be alot of fun.
Shirley Muldowney had one similar - The Bounty Huntress - had a candy orange paint scheme with red-orange panel painting and silver window surrounds. Steve
Try googling the vels & Parnelli funnycar driven by Denny Ongias. There is a site called classicfunnycars.com. Post this and ask for Dennis Dobleday. You will find your answer there I belive......Good luck and you got a real nice piece there. John
Thanks guys. The Muldowney/Kallita "Bounty Hunter/Huntress was mentioned by the guy I bought it from. It's close but I don't think that's it. The Vel's Parnelli Jones car seems like a very interesting lead. I've found pictures of model kits of that car and they look very similar. Thanks for the new direction, I think I'm getting closer to figuring out some history on this car.
try here....http://classicfunnycarboard.com/CFB/index.php The picture thread at top has every car ever raced. And the guys at that board have been doing this for ever. They will have the whole story for you. When you get a few laps on it contact Denny S. of the Great lakes funny Car group. We travel out to match race with them guys once in a while. He's a great promoter. Competitive isn't necessary, entertainment and a good show. If you can run consistant 7.20's, you'd fit right in. I think he runs a couple of shows a year in Canada, too.
Thanks, I submitted a post at classic fc board. Hopefully I can get some history on this thing. I may regret the new paint scheme and lettering if I find out it was a well known car with some history.
Hey buddy, did you hear back from the F/C site yet? I think we'd all be interested in the history of this wicked machine of yours!
Here's one of my favorite pic's of your funny car Brent....this one from last years Hartman/ E.L.T.A. Shop party......I just couldn't out run your beast....lol.
I didn't realize funny cars were a topic my luck I picked up Jerry Caminito's old top fuel Blue Thunder Olds last yr.from Wes Bretten ,Wild Thang while removing the vinyl revealed some of the pink stripe down the side ,Wes told me it came out of New York. My plans are to put this baby on the street the chassis is from a old Vega funny I once owned,, 454 ect,
Moved to the off topic forum as the main board has a 1965 cut off and there are no Mustangs allowed there...
