Hello folks, I am 6ft 4 and 210. What are yall doing to make it a comfortable ride in a Model A coupe or truck. Like be able to at least stretch your legs a bit. Thanks for the input and help Scott
Tudoor sedans are easy to move the seat back. Pickups can only have the cab extended,to gain leg room.
With a Tudor sedan you could also run a late 1931 Deluxe Tudor drivers seat. The seat adjusts back and forth on slides
trucks are too damn small for us big guys. 6'1" 270 lbs I took out the package sheld in my A Coupe, and moved the seats back. It's chopped 3 inches. I am very comfy, but I do have to like the person sitting next to me, we are tight side to side.
Yah im 5'12'' and 220. in my RPU i cant drive it for more than an hour, i sit way up high in it. My 30 coupe is comfortable.
I'm not that tall, (6') but the first thing I do with model "A"s is to get rid of the stock seat springs in favor of a good high desity foam to get the seating posistion down a bit. I've done this with stockers as well as hot rods. It also helps big time with ingress/egress because your feet don't get tangled in the seats going in and out of the doors. I would pretty much tell you to forget an "A" pickup...
I'm 5' 10" and 207 lbs. I have a chopped ( 4" ) 29 roadster. I had to cut the floor and made a seat to fit in the space I cut out, the floor actually sits on the frame rails and the seat is well, here's a picture. Not a long distance car, but it does have a nice stance.
So removing the package tray will allow the seat to go far enough back to make it more comfortable? Thats good to know. Are you using the stock seat?
I feel sorry for you guys. I could fit three of me in a chopped/channeled A. On second thought, two and a cooler for a arm rest would probably be more accurate.
i'm still just mocking everything up in my 30 PU... i'm 6'1" 170...i decided NOT to channel, ditch the stock seat, and plan to chop 2 1/2 or 3 inches..plus it has a reversed firewall... so far it seems pretty comfortable, but then again i haven't drivin it yet!
While I love coupes, this is why one of my cars is a 2dr. sedan (29). It's chopped 4",1/2" and channeled 5". While at the moment I still have to do the bend and sway routine, there's room for bomber seats and a different placement this winter.
At 5'-10" and 170# I feel im pushing the size limit and I know thats not a big person. I moved my seat back and as far down as it will go, still wish i had more..but it is what it is. I didnt chop mine for 2 reasons..1 everyone chops em 2 I like my hats
I'm 6'6" and 245lbs. I'm building a 30 model A (see my photo album). We got rid of the package shelf and gained about 2-3". I'm also running a 32 frame. This will make for more room in the engine compartment so you dont have to recess the firewall. I have a 283 in the car and my firewall is stock. This will give you the extra room needed for those long things you call legs. My car is chopped 2" and it is probably as far as it can go for me. I can sit in my car and just about straighten my legs - pretty amazing for guys my size. Feel free to PM me should you have any questions!!
I am only 6' tall but I rode to the LSR in Joe Kerr's chopped A coupe and had more than enough room. The firewall is reversed to make room for the nailhead Buick motor and I can only just reach it with my feet. The seat is set back and close to the floor so there is also lots of headroom despite the chop. Roo
Here's what I did, First I found a Vicky because its already chopped 1-1/2 inches from the factory, has the biggest doors & the floor is recessed below the frame rails. The floor could be set up like that on any model A. Mine is chopped another 3 so the windshield opening is 6" at the center. Lots of work to get there and make it look right but I have 45" from floor pan to where the headliner will be at drivers position. My DD 07 chevy 1500 truck is 48" . The vicky door opening is 39" high by 33 wide clear opening. Truck is 44 x 30" clear as the dash is well into the opening. My truck seating position is 14" above the floor, so I can have a seat in my Vicky about 8-10 inches above the floor and still have plenty of room in there.
I have a model "A" roadster pickup. I chopped the window two inches and with the stock seat the top of the windshield frame is level with my eyes. I sat too tall so I removed the stock seat and placed a piece of plywood on the seat riser. Just using a pillow off of the bed to sit on now. It is actually easier to get in and out of now. With the stock seat I always had trouble getting my foot out of the door. I now sit low and do not have the top of the windshield frame to block my vision. I have not taken the dog for a ride yet. I hope he likes the new seating. He should be able to get in easier too.
My '30 coupe is channeled the width of the frame, stock height top. The package tray was removed and stock seat moved back as far as possible. It's a squeeze getting past the stock '40 wheel on a '40 dash, but once I'm in, it's great (5'10", 205).
I have a '29 RPU with a stock seat that was overstuffed in the '70s when it was originally done. I don't get into this RPU - rather, I have to put the damned thing on! It's comfortable enough, and I drive it up to an hour before having any real comfort issues, and it is a 2000cc Pinto motored and 4 speed trans'd. I live with it because it is what it is. Eventually, I'm planning to build a custom seat and move it down and back as much as possible for a bit of more room. When I drive it, I look like a real life characterization of a Rat Fink Poster! As for what I'm going to do with my '29 CC pickup is stretch the damned thing! Going to ply Chadillac with enough beer and food to coerce him into making the panels for me and stretch this thing out another 10-12 inches at least! It's not going to happen overnight, so I'm planning my bed to work with both the regular cab and then again when I stretch it.
Me: 6ft, 170. My coupe: Chopped 6in. NOT channeled. Remove package tray, and get the seat height lower. I have tons of leg room, and have logged thousands of miles in it. People are usually surprised when they ride in it and its quite comfortable. You are gonna have to pick, chop or channel. Don't do both.
I'm 6'5" 260, legroom in my '38 Ford pickup is barely adequate with a thinner seat back than the truck had originally (modified a back seat out of an '89 Ford Tempo). Friend of mine had a '32 Ford pickup with a recessed firewall running a 302 Ford, I could barely get in on the p***enger side--it would have been physically impossible for me to drive that truck. I could have ended up taller than I did-- my great-grandfather Turner was 6 '8" and wore size 16 shoes.
I have a chopped and channeled '34 pickup, and I am 6'1" 170#. What I did was use a second row mini van seat, but cut the back off of it. I just use the bottom frame and pad, with a small back pad about 8 inches tall. It gives some lumbar support, but I am actually leaning against the back of the truck cab. I glued some refrigerator padding to the back of the cab, and it gave a great deal of leg room. Longest trip I took was 2 hours and it was good.
I shortened the stock back seat cushion on my roadster and moved the seat riser back 4 1/2 in. The back of the seat slid under the package shelf and gained 4 1/2 inches. That's a bunch. It does make legroom in the rumble seat very small.
