will my stock 1949 hudson rear end[from factory -made no more than 145hp & 257 lb ft of torque] hold up to a big block with only 230-255hp 385-400 lb ft of torque? with reg driving. or should find a newer style rear end? i was thinking it would be geared way to high for big block-to many RPMs and if i should look for a newer rear, what make/model/year
If you drive it hard at all, change it. The spiders won't hold up. Can't tell you what to use in place of it. Butch
I am doing the same thing using a big block mopar. The rear axel is a older mopar 8 3/4 and is strong. Mine had 4.10 gears and it was easy to trade third members with another guy. And a simple gear swap. I traded my 4.10 for 3.23,s. you can put on newer backing plates and drums if you want and b body axels, if you want to get rid of the big nut on the axel too.
Lincoln versailles 9" is almost perfect fit with disk brakes. Ford Granada also works well, but not as beefy.
thanks new guy & Butch11443. hey ya Don,i kinda thought you would know, but didn't wanna bug ya,i know you work crazy hours like me,but i still wanna come down & check out your rides.
