would like to see some pics.if any one has put, one of these motors in a 1938 chevy 1/2 ton pickup.also any info on install of motors, like firewall or fan space.thanks.
I would be interested in the same thing too as I have a 292 to go in a '41. Apologies for hijacking your thread mate.
I think that these block are about 2" longer than the earlier sixes and would guess that the best solution is to just leave the firewall alone and modify the rad housing to suit. Would flipping the brackets that are soldered to the rad work? Looks like it would on mine if I could sweat them off without melting every other bit of solder in the vicinity. Only issue might be the grille profile if it is smaller on the '38? I was planning on making a motor plate to support the front of the block using the stock front crossmember and removing the side mounts from the motor. That would mean running a stock type of mount on each side of the bellhousing though. I ***ume you are hoping to run with three pedals? LT.
I know its not the vehicle your talking about, but I have a 250 chev in my 48 ford, recess is made out of a $.50 steel cake pan from a thrift store;pic is from mock up.also using a 68 mustang 3 core rad, just get a water neck pointing the other way and your set.250 is also shorter than the 62 and earlier engines.I also have a 37 PU and will be using the same things learned on the 48.Glad your stickin with a six, post some pics!
i don't have pictures right know, but i have a '39 gmc with an '82 292 in it. the firewall did not have to be cut. radiator is from a late 60's dodge dart... i think, but i can get the part number. i used the original thermostat housing, it fit the and pointed the right way.
A '40 GMC pickup radiator might do it. Bolts right in except for a little t******* on the piece of sheet metal in the upper tank area. The '38 in the avatar has been that way since the '50's with a 270 GMC in it. Very close to the length of a 292.
A 250 / 292 is 1.5" longer than yours. I moved my radiator forward a bit on the '50. You get extra credit points if you graft that GMC valve cover into your new one!
The 292 is the same length, but a little taller than the 250. Taller deck height. If you are choosing one, I would go for the 292, more cubes. You have plenty of height room before worrying about hood clearance.
height isn't a problem. i originally had a 250 in mine before i built the 292 [10 over making it almost a 302] and if i remember right, it's been 20 years since i changed it, the p***enger side motor mount is different and the radiator had to be moved forward
the p***enger side motor mount on the 292 is farther foward, the 194,239,250 mounts are directly across from each other side to side. go for the 292 tons of torque but both good engines.
