When is a car "too rough" to fool with?

    I fully agree. The first thing that came to me was the two door 5 window coupe option, but any of the above would work. In fact you could add bobbed 2 door sedan with suicide doors. All different and doable.

    That is a lot of work. You are looking at all the work that needs to be done - bad juju. Focus on just one small thing and start on it, you need to get to bare frame rails - don't worry about missing doors or the color of a steering wheel, you need to figure if you want dropped axle and how best to get that done, then you start on about the brakes ...etc. Maybe by next summer you'll have a roller. Then start on the floors, then some skins, maybe the roof. You just do one small thing at a time.

    Think of it this way, lots of people have bought nicely painted complete cars that have been full of bondo and chicken wire, the engine wore out, ****** slipping and rearend locked up. You are already waaayy ahead of them!

    check out the build threads on the cars the guys overseas are building and that looks cherry compared to some of those cars.

    This is damned good advice. I never look at a project as a whole other than to get an idea where I would like to end up. If I looked at it as a whole it would be very easy for me to be overwhelmed.

    When it exceeds your budget AND
    capabilities.....

    If you only suffer from one of the two, no project is too rough.

    Frame work is easy!! If you have one solid side to go off of, you just mirror it on the other side. If both sides are rotten, wing it!! Just make sure both sides match and are solid. You can add mounts later, when you know what hardware you're going with.
    In all honesty, you'd want to box that frame anyway. You have the perfect car to learn these skills on. Simple frame, simple body work. But YOU have to decide if you want to learn or not. You only need basic skills to make that car into something. Personally, I'd love to have something like that to teach myself on. My 55 is all bolt on and go.

    Can't find front doors for your 31 MoPar? No sweat. I bought this 31 as you see it except I chopped it with photo shop...just an option.
    I think these guys had a little too much Budwieser when they shortened the frame...one side was over a inch longer than the other. I fabb'd up a new ch***is from box tubing later.

    Please excuse the 3 min PS, but this is what I see. Shorten it up the length of the missing doors, cut off the roof to build a tub, and instant hot rod! Maybe its because I am a big guy that really wants a t-bucket but this is what I see. Tons of potential in that car if you have some metal working skills!

    Anything can be fixed, it just depends on how hard you want to work and how broke you happen to be.
     
  19. This illustrates the #1 problem with the car hobby. Just because *YOU* don't have the skills, talent, ability or desire to fix a car, doesn't mean it's junk and there isn't someone else who WOULD fix it. It just means you aren't going to do it. But there are more people out there that this just never crosses their mind - they're no better really than the s**** guy who sees everything as junk. Especially when they're ***holes about it.

    Case in point - I sold this Buick to a guy who about a year later had it in primer ready for paint. It was wrecked and then left upside down in the junkyard for like 40 years, after someone cut the front frame stub off. The wreck appears to have been a slide sideways into a telephone pole, plus some front end damage; the hood I found but it wasn't usable, the fenders and radiator support I was able to get but they were also bent all to hell. He had to combine parts of three cars to put it together. But by now it should be done. I'd bet there's virtually no one on this board who'd be willing to tackle it.

    Where there is a want there is a way. Doors smores, either make some or wait till ya get some or you can build a *****en custom. Anybody can do anything they want if they put thier mind to it, thier had to be some want there to go get it. If you dont feel up to it sell it to a hamb member and buy somethin your more inclined to finish.Good luck.LB

    I see taking on something like that as having no down side if your objective is to learn and have fun doing it.

    The thing was destined to be s****, so almost any finished version is a plus for the car.

    I'd make it into a two door sedan.

    And I can echo what others have said, yes it's fixable, anything is fixable. You ought to see what they bring back to life in England, and I'm not talking big $$ sports cars either.

    That car is very doable, I'd also imagine that it's a rather rare item to boot, but regardless, it's lived for 80 years and it does deserve to live again. As far as doors go, well yeah, they're going to be a paint to find, it's not exactly an MGB or 65 Mustang or tri-5 Chevy, but to me, that's almost half the challenge. There's parts for my Avatar car that I have been hunting for since 2001.....
