I just completed a two year build of a 34 Ford truck (Rat Rod) and am in the process of trying to get it registered in California. I purchased a ***le for a '34 Ford truck from Maryland and I hired a Registration Verifier to run it through the DMV hoping they could surcomvent the system a bit. I was sent to the CHP office for verificaton of the engine number as it didn't match the ***le. At the CHP office I was told that all of the laws changed in 2010 and it was now concidered a new vehicle and would have to comply to all of the vehicle code requirements such as bumpers, fenders, etc. They also said the engine would have to be blessed by a state referee regarding noise and emissions. I can't comply to all of thier requirments and am now concidering registering it in Nevada and then transfering it to Cal. Any suggestions or input would be appreciated. Thanks. Costy von M***eenbach

Yes it is his first post and yes he used the R R words and the flaming will begin anytime now. But his problems with registration can and will happen to many of the readers / Hamb members. If you live in California, I would not spend any money until you have a registration / Pink slip in hand.
Hmm, been here for more than a year and haven't figured out that Rat Rods are not part of this forum. Bought a ***le, with the intent of re-using it on another vehicle - fraud that is a felony - and puts it in print here. Engine numbers are NOT on the ***le on California vehicles (except motorcycles) Depending on how far that "Verifier" went with DMV, if it's in the system now, you are probably screwed to "surcomvent" (it's cir***vent by the way) the system. And before you post anything else, do yourself a favor and read this and follow the rules http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44274
Screw him. He tried to beat the system and got caught. Even though he does not know how to spell cir***vent, those are his words. No sympathy from me. Do it right, or don't do it, and don't whine when you get caught doing something you know is wrong. As to the Rat Rod, his has to be a first. A two year rat rod build. Slow death for some poor car.
CA ***le in hand FIRST, then build. Should be frame numbers only on the ***le. My Model A has a CA ***igned VIN (not a fake "body number" tag from eBay) with a tag riveted to the firewall, and that's the number on the ***le. I bought it this way, and it transferred over just like any other car. No inspection required. If you're not too far screwed by the system tell them you bought it off of your grandmother and it's been sitting behind her house for 50 years. Also, DO AN INTRO, and don't use the rat rod ***le. Good luck.
Yeah, I guess my question is...Where on that car is the number on the ***le stamped? The original engine number WOULD have had the number stamped on it along with the frame and bellhousing. I'm sure the DMV would have accepted any of the three. But...now I think he's screwed...
If it still resembles a '34 pickup, then I think you don't need to register it as a specially constructed vehicle. I'm guessing it's never been registered here, or it lapsed so long the VIN isn't in the computer (system). I'm thinking you made something that would've been easy, more difficult. I'd start over. Here's a reply I just wrote on specially constructed vehicles, IF you have to go that route:

A 2 year project an NOW you want to get paperwork? Thats ***backwards. As far as Nevada goes,(at least Clark County) it ain't no better, they just copied all of CAs rules, thats one reason I left. If you get NV paper, when you xfer to CA it will still need a VIN chk. And what the hell is a "Registration Verifier?"
Wow, I am just amazed at these guys announcing to all how they are committing fraud and VIN switching. And when they get caught they want to try it in another state to beat the system. HELLO! there are legal ways to register your car instead of making it more difficult for the rest of us that have done it correctly.
Best advice I can p*** along to you is for you to go to the store and buy yourself some Vaseline...........because you're ****ed.
