Well, most people were calling it scrap metal My grandpa gave me some old Buick pieces a while back and we finally drug them home. I'm told the engine is a 1948 Straight 8 with a possibly rare short 3spd manual trans. I also got the front frame clip with suspension and steering it was sitting on which is supposed to be from a '41 Buick convertible. I have no idea what I'm going to do with this stuff, I'm just glad to see it on my trailer instead of on one heading to the scrap pile. This stuff was sitting behind his barn for like 40 years (covered) I haven't tried to turn the motor yet, but I'm crossing my fingers. I think it's just a 248, but as my dad said, they didn't make any new ones yesterday, so it's still nice to get it. For some reason I'm fascinated by the look of the old Stromberg Aerotype carb sitting on top of this thing.
Buick made a straight 8 with 2 Areotypes. around 41 or so. Eddie Edmunds designed some of his OHV 8 manifolds with that carb in mind, for Cad Olds etc.
I can't get either of my cameras to talk to my PC for some reason. I took a bunch of pics of the thing tonight though. If nothing else, I'll upload them to my dad's pc tomorrow and post them.
Well we unloaded this thing today. It appears it's not going to take much to get it turning over. It was trying. I'm going to dump some fluids in the cylinders and let it soak for a week and give it a go. If it'll turn over nicely and I can afford it, I may rebuild the carb and distributor and see what happens. Does anyone know anything about the 'short' 3 speed transmission used in some of these cars? My grandpa was saying they were rare and hard to find back in the 50s. I can't find much of any data on it so far. The casting number on the left side of the case is 1312387-6 Also, I'm having a hard time ID'ing the motor for sure on size/year. The stamped number on the block (in front of the dist) is A4314128. Any ideas? Now I just have to figure out what to do with the front frame clip. It's got a complete suspension under it from drum to drum. Along with quite a few other little odds and ends.
